Sony’s latest DRM screw-up

p2pnet.net news:- Financially, intellectually and ethically challenged Sony calls it a ‘glitch’. Others call it another tacky attempt at DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) consumer control.

“In their zeal to make their DVD movies copyproof (yeah right) they have in fact made their latest releases unplayable on some DVD players, including my Sony DVP-CX995V DVD player,” says Mick B on Just another WordPress.com weblog.

He wasn’t alone. Tons of other people were having the same experience.

Now, “Sony DADC says it will replace copy-protected DVDs that are ‘incompatible’ with a small number of DVD players,” says PC World. “Sony says 20 DVD titles are affected including Open Season, Casino Royal, Stranger Than Fiction, Rocky Balboa, and The Holiday.

It’s all down to Sony’s use of the ARccOS DRM Sony says was used, “on a small number of DVDs” – ie, as many as 25 million of them, according to the story,.

How will you know if you’re one of the victims? Your DVD won’t play.

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!
