Dell re-offers XP
p2pnet.net news:- Vistas never was WOW. Rather, it was, and is, LBB, “late, bloated and buggy” and, “this might actually be a problem for Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer and crew,” says Forbes, going on:
“Not that this is going to stop Microsoft, in the near-term, from doing what monopolies do: making big piles of money. Microsoft will post third-quarter earnings after the market closes, and analysts expect to see net income of $4.5 billion, or 46 cents a share, up from $3.3 billion, or 29 cents a share for the same period a year earlier, thanks to the January release of Vista.”
Some of that is down to the fact to the fact Vista is part of the package with a lot of system makers: you get it whether you wanted it or not and if it’s Not, getting your it, and all the other unasked for dross, off your box, plus a refund, is no easy matter. Even if you’re not worried about the $ and just want a clean machine, the average non-tech user will still have problems. What’s needed and what isn’t, and how do you uninstall what isn’t?
That’s easy, you say, but not to everyone, it isn’t.
However, “Dell recognizes our customers’ desire to have unlimited control over the software on their PC,” stated Dell on its Ideas in Action in February, also saying XPS customers could, “opt-out of almost all preinstalled software” and that it’ll be, “expanding this effort in the coming months”.
In addition, “customers can kick-off an un-install of almost any application by declining the EULA (End User Licensing Agreement) associated with software”.
Now, it’ll continue to offer Windows XP both Home and Pro editions to anyone who buys the Dell Inspiron 1405, 1705, 1505, 1501, and Dell Dimension E520 and E521.
“Customers using Dell’s IdeaStorm website … have managed to get the company to change its policy on supplying Windows XP for home machines,” says Geek.com.
“Dell had decided that as of January 2007 (Windows Vista’s consumer launch date) it would start to phase out Windows XP on the home PCs it sold, leading to it being offered on only two models as of March. Using the IdeaStorm site, Dell counted almost 11,000 votes for ‘[Don’t eliminate XP just yet,’ and in response the company has now increased the number of PC models with Windows XP as an option to 6 (two desktops, four laptops).”
The only comment from Bill and the Boyz was: Dell is responding to a very small number of customer requests, says the story.
But if you’re Microsoft, who cares anyway?
Dell has, “always loyally jammed Microsoft’s latest software into its PCs,” says Forbes, adding:
“Dell’s announcement aside, Vista will dominate the desktop, of course. But the desktop has always been the place from which Microsoft can get a grip on the rest of the computing world. The question: If that strength has turned into a soft spot, then what?”

I think Microsoft is going to hit a “brick wall” with vista…it may take awhile…but when people find out just how unfriendly it really is, they will be turned off by it and demand something different.

That’s about as lame as the voice recognition “exploit”.
Of course you can install a rootkit if you have physical access to the machine. Same goes for any machine regardless of the OS.

That’s what Linux is for

No it is not. XP does what linux cannot, so until they come out with a Linux distro that will have the attention of large software manufacturers, I will stick with xp. You can keep linux!
