Dell adopts Ubuntu Linux
p2pnet.net news:- Dell launched IdeaStorm so users could have a say in what systems Dell computers should feature should have and under pre-installed Linux | Ubuntu | Fedora | OpenSUSE | Multi-Boot, thousands of users were calling for Linux as an option on all Dell PCs.
But, “new open-minded attitudes on open source notwithstanding, it’s not quite ready to go that far, although it says it’ll, “certify some of its corporate machines with Novell’s Suse Linux software,” said ZDNet News, going on, “Certification should mean that Suse would function smoothly on all Dell PCs.”
Now Dell says its by the end of this month, Linux desktop PCs and laptops will come preloaded with Ubuntu Linux.
“Models, configurations and prices of the Ubuntu-loaded hardware have not been announced,” says Computerworld. “They will run Version 7.04 of Ubuntu Linux and will be available through a dedicated Linux Web page on the Dell.com site where buyers will be able to configure and price their machines.
“Details are also being worked out regarding support for the new Ubuntu Linux-equipped machines … operating system support could be provided through the open-source Ubuntu and Linux communities - which survey respondents said they preferred - or through a paid support contract with Canonical Ltd., the Isle of Man-based company that is the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu Linux.”
Will other manufacturers follow suit?
If there’s sufficient customer demand, “HP will begin to install Linux as a standard setting,” says InfoWorld. But so far, “the company has seen that demand only in specialized niches - HP ships Linux on certain entry-level consumer PCs in developing countries and offers it as an option for US enterprise customers designing customized business desktops, notebooks, and workstations.”
Lenovo already offers dozens of models that are certified to run Linux if customers choose to install it, it adds, but “the company installs Linux on only a select few products, such as the ThinkPad T60p mobile workstation it launched in August for industrial-strength applications such as computer-aided design,” it states. “That PC uses the Novell Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 OS and Intel’s Centrino Duo notebook platform.”
