HD DVD crack cracks Digg

At first, only Digg was flooded with it.
Then it dumped posts carrying it, ‘it’ being code written to get around the DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) consumer control on HD DVD discs.
Now the entire Net is flooded with 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0.
“Is the mighty Digg in trouble?” - asks Bob on the BobmeetsTheWorld blog, continuing:
The mega-site prouds itself on being all about what they call ‘user powered content’.
Then they turned around and buried a users submission regarding a secret HD DVD Key hack. Why? Because Hd DVD is a Digg sponsor.
Money seems more important than user loyalty and I guess Digg thought they would get away with it. Again.
But wait, power to the people. It seems readers aren’t taking this crap and have been submitting the story about the HD DVD key hack like crazy.
Then, “Today was an insane day,” posted Digg’s Kevin Rose, going on:
And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts …
In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.
But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.
If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.
“How long before the upgraded security is downgraded?” - p2pnet wondered when Corel Software announced customers would now have to download a new version of its InterVideo WinDVD software if they want to be able to watch their HD DVD or Blu-ray discs on PCs.
Never? That was the implication in a statement from Corel spokeswoman Catherine Hughes. “We have tremendous confidence in the AACS system and our products’ upgraded security,” she declared.
Now, “First much thanks to arnezami for contributing with a xor and sum calculation app and sharing headache,” says Geremia on the Doom9 forums, unravellers of DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) consumer control creations.
The entertainment cartels call DRM self-protection, claiming buyers don’t actually get to own music or movies on the discs: they only license it for limited use, and that despite the fact no contracts or agreements are signed at points of purchase.
If buyers could do whatever they wanted with DVDs, they’d immediately start counterfeiting or duplicating them so they could sell them illegally on- and offline, goes the cartel’s way of thinking.
In other words, entertainment industry customers aren’t reasonable people: rather, they’re all potential thieves who must be forcibly stopped from engaging in criminal acts.
