Britain’s ‘Doomsday’ email book

p2pnet.net OT news:- The BBC is calling it a “21st century Domesday Book,” a “snapshot” of the UK seen through emails compiled by the British Library.

“The library is asking everyone in the UK to forward an e-mail from their inbox or sent mail box representing their life or interests,” says the Beeb. “Alternatively, people can submit a specially-composed message.”

Each “eligible” email received this month will be recorded and used to build an E-Mail Britain archive.

Says John Tuck, head of British Collections at the British Library, quoted by the Press Association, said: “Email has in many respects replaced traditional forms of communications such as letters or memoranda, thousands of examples of which we have at the British Library. In the digital age, email has become prevalent in our day-to-day lives.

“Email Britain will allow us to archive a vast snapshot of our present-day email communications and will be of great value for future researchers.

Naturally, Bill and the Boyz are using it to promote Microsoft.

Microsoft is “joining forces with the library,” says PA, quoting Hotmail’s Jo Wickremasinghe, as saying, “Mini soap operas are played out in inboxes across the country every day, from job offers to wedding proposals, big breaks to break-ups.”

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!
