Dell in Microsoft, Novell, Linux pact

p2pnet.net news:- The corporate biggies are scrambling in a fruitless effort to make up ground they’ve lost by allowing open-sourced Linux to become thoroughly entrenched in both the business and public sectors.

“Microsoft said on Monday that Dell had joined a business collaboration it had with Novell to allow open-source Linux software to work with Windows,” states ZDNet UK.

“The move makes Dell the first major systems provider to join the Microsoft-Novell collaboration, which consists of a broad set of business and technological agreements to make their products work together better to serve corporate customers using both Linux and Windows computer servers.”

Dell will now buy Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server certificates from Bill and the Boyz, “and will also work on a migration effort for non-Dell Linux customers,” says internetnews.com.

But, the deal doesn’t mean Dell, “will be soliciting its own Red Hat Linux user base or even its soon-to-be ramped up Ubuntu Linux user base,” says the story.

“The program is focused on large customers who currently have unsupported Linux or are planning to deploy Linux and Windows in large datacenter environments,” it has Rick Becker, vp of solutions in the Dell product group, saying. “Dell has a very strong relationship with Red Hat, and this agreement is not targeting migrations from Red Hat Linux customers.”

When the Free Software Foundation (FSF) released the third discussion draft for Version 3 of the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL). it was “designed to ensure that all users of a program receive the four essential freedoms which define free software,” said foundation president and principal GNU GPL author Richard Stallman, going on:

“These freedoms allow you to run the program as you see fit, study and adapt it for your own purposes, redistribute copies to help your neighbor, and release your improvements to the public.

“The recent patent agreement between Microsoft and Novell aims to undermine these freedoms. In this draft we have worked hard to prevent such deals from making a mockery of free software.”

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!
