Nine Inch Nails on ‘absurd’ pricing
p2pnet.net news:- “As the climate grows more and more desperate for record labels, their answer to their mostly self-inflicted wounds seems to be to screw the consumer over even more.”
Interesting post, and accurate.
It goes on to cite couple of examples:
The ABSURD retail pricing of Year Zero in Australia. Shame on you, UMG. Year Zero is selling for $34.99 Australian dollars ($29.10 US). No wonder people steal music. Avril Lavigne’s record in the same store was $21.99 ($18.21 US).
By the way, when I asked a label rep about this his response was: “It’s because we know you have a real core audience that will pay whatever it costs when you put something out – you know, true fans. It’s the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy.”
So… I guess as a reward for being a “true fan” you get ripped off.
The dreaded EURO Maxi-single. Nothing but a consumer rip-off that I’ve been talked into my whole career. No more.
So where does this come from? Nine Inch Nails. Again.
“As a reward for stealing Year Zero, we’ve prepared the next batch of audio files for you to download,” NIN posted on its site recently.
Now, “The point is, I am trying my best to make sure the music and items NIN puts in the marketplace have value, substance and are worth you considering purchasing,” says Trent, adding, “I am not allowing Capital G to be repackaged into several configurations that result in you getting ripped off.
“We are planning a full-length remix collection of substance that will be announced soon.”

And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Cds have been over priced for years. I thought years ago the labels got busted for price fixing them. BUt have yet to see them come back down. The first day Avril Lavignes cd came out it was 9.99 (can) and now it is 14.99-16.99 depending on the store. Now 9.99 was a good price. It was even good enough to buy even though I had the mp3s before the cd even came out.
Cds shouldnt be 18.99 just like dvds shouldnt be 28.99. I figure they raised the price of dvds so it didnt make HDdvds and Blurays look so expensive.
