p2pnet.net news:- Most people intensely dislike the advertising that’s forcibly thrust on them every time they turn on the TV or listen to commercial radio.

Devices such as TiVo were developed specifically to jump ads, with the ‘creative’ and marketing industries, not to mention the manufacturers, screaming in outrage. So the devices were consequently corrected to accord with the demands of the (mostly) entertainment cartels.

But if most of us hate advertising so much, why bother with it? Surely it’s not going to result in people buying whatever is being offered? Surely, the customer is always right? And if something annoys him or her, or it should be discontinued?

If you believe that, you probably still believe in fairies as well.

It’s long been established that if you say something often enough and loud enough people will eventually swallow it, even though it’s obviously incorrect or even repulsive.

You could ask Nazi information minister Joseph Goebbels about this, if he were alive. Or you could talk to the spin doctors working for the entertainment cartels. By constant repetition, they’ve managed to turn simple copyright infringement into a major crime.

Then there’s the famous Pavlovian reflex.

Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was studying digestion, using dogs as his subjects. He found that by ringing a bell repeatedly and offering them food, he could ‘condition’ them to salivate by merely sounding the bell.

So clearly from an advertiser’s perspective, the more often advertisements can be shown, the better. The same applies online, of course. And have you noticed the volume in TV advertising is frequently significantly louder than the programs it interrupts?

In America, the ratio of programming to advertising seems to be about 1 to 10, with the 10 referring to the ads, and things have almost reached the stage where programming supports advertising instead of the other way around.

It wouldn’t be so bad if the commercials were intelligent, as as is the case with many European ads, but in North America they’re for the most part mind numbingly stupid.

Canada isn’t quite so horrific in terms of how often ads appear within each progamming hour. But that’s about to change.

“Conventional” TV networks wanted to stick viewers with an additional fee to watch programs on cable or through satellite.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) said No to that, but, says the CanWest News Service, to take away some of the pain, regulators now say restrictions on how many minutes of advertising can be packed into an hour will soon be eliminated.

“Beginning in September, broadcasters will be allowed 14 minutes of advertising, up from the current 12, during prime-time evening viewing hours,” says the story.

But by 2009, there’ll be no limits whatsoever.

“The new rules, the first revamping since 1999, will ensure conventional broadcasters such as CTV, Global and the CBC are able ‘to operate effectively in a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive communications environment’,” the CRTC said.

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

    As said in “Super Size Me”, America is the fattest and the dumbest in the world. If Europeans are able to reject low-quality products, Americans swallow everything. Even Chinese realize that best quality should go to Europe, and the lowest can be exported to USA and Canada.

    Americans don’t have a choice. The government here is cartel and special interest controlled. Our votes or voices matter very little. It’s not that we are stupid, it’s that we live in the Police States of Amerika. It is only by violating corporate-government policies do we have any real choice. This is why there is so much “piracy” happening. I refuse to pay for advertisements to be blasted into my face. Therefore, I have cancelled my cable subscription as well as quit renting or buying movies. If I want to watch something, I can get it easily online for free.
