Windows user finds security hole

p2pnet.net News:- Scottish IT specialist Matt Thompson, 19, found a security hole in Microsoft’s Windows which would have allowed a hacker to take control, install programs, and view, change, or delete data.

So, says a BBC story here, Thompson got in touch with Bill’s Boyz – not that it didn’t take a lot of trying.

He had trouble convincing Microsoft it had a problem and, “At first I was put through to a load of different departments because they thought I was a home user with a problem,” he’s quoted as saying.

“Then I got put through to the security response team and that’s when we started working together, passing bits of code back and forth.”

Thompson, from Aberdeen, spent six months working with Microsoft programmers helping to solve the problem.

So Microsoft was very, very grateful. Right?

Well, Thompson got a mention on the MS web page. And, “In a statement the company told BBC Scotland it would like to thank Matt for working with it to help protect customers,” says the report, adding:

“His boss, Aberdeen IT managing director Steve Lai, said: ‘In terms of what he achieved for Microsoft that acknowledgement is nothing, really nothing. For an organisation the size of Microsoft, it could have done more’.”

Nice one, Microsoft.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

No kidding, one would think that “Majorprofit” could afford to express their gratitude monetarily.

yeah, he’s saved them millions of pounds worth of damage. He was never in it for the money, but a couple of thousand for his efforts would have been nice hehe. Some papers are trying to make out like hes moaning about not getting payed, but he seriously isnt.

let microsofts lesson be to themselves, next time someone finds a fault they might just take advantage of it. Instead of being honest and assisting them to fix it!! I.m sure Bill G can spare a few coins from his mountain
