Facebook copies Microsoft
p2pnet.net news:- The Facebook face-lift means the company is taking pages from the Microsoft book.
Under a new plan, “Rather than using Facebook only to keep in touch with friends and going elsewhere for other content, users could … gain access to that content inside Facebook,” said The Wall Street Journal recently
The move could also, “keep people on Facebook for longer periods of time, which would also appeal to advertisers,” said the story.
Now, “Mark Zuckerberg, the company’s 23-year-old founder and chief executive, said Thursday the move was similar to what Microsoft did decades ago, when the relatively obscure software maker began encouraging third-party companies to write programs for its PC-operating system,” states Associated Press.
“That strategy made Microsoft phenomenally profitable and helped turn co-founder Bill Gates – like Zuckerberg, a Harvard University dropout – into the world’s richest man.”
Facebook is, “revealing dozens of new partners to embed a dizzying array of applications – known as widgets – into the site from such companies as Amazon, Microsoft Corp. and Warner Bros. Records,” observes the Hollywood Reporter, going on:
“Among the 65 inaugural developers that will contribute widgets to the site include Amazon, which would allow Facebook users to write and exhibit book reviews directly on their profile pages along with a link to purchase the book. Content applications already signed up for Facebook include such sites as uPlayMe and CollegeHumor, which will enable sharing and showcasing of their programs.”
