well, it looks like you've completely missed the point. firstly, this isn't a case of fraud. in no way does this even touch upon fraud, in fact i'm puzzled as to why you would go so far as to mention fraud.

yes it is is illegal to reproduce copywrited material, but it's also illegal for a university to infringe on a student's right to privacy, and immeasurably more damaging.

it's not about letting students download music for free. in fact, from what i've seen, there's a large push to have universities take ownership for the problem, to inform students, to institute measures to prevent transfer of copywrited works, and so forth.

since the students do in fact pay for internet access, whether through ancillary fees or an explicit internet connection charge, shouldn't they have the right to engage in whatever legal usage they want (like fucking around, playing games and surfing porn)?

lastly, you sound like an RIAA representative when you say "fuck the students" not exactly becoming. and as far as ripoff punks, the jury is still out as to whether the students are really ripping anyone off, or just violating copyright law.

thank you for your comment.

Wrong. Dorm room access is paid for in a utility fee which is part of room and board. You might as well say that kids in dorm rooms get free cable from the university as well. High-speed broadband costs way too much for a university to be able to simply "give it away" to its students.

That won't work. Universities and other such places have legal remedies that allow them to simply explain away to any lawyer how such a lawsuit could not carry any merit. There were a few students who tried to sue my school due to Honor Code violations, and they never were even able to get as far as to file the suit.

Becides, if kids can't afford to fight the RIAA in court, what makes you think that they can afford to fight their own univerisity? Remember that lawsuits are expensive for the plantiff as well as the defendant. The university can also threaten to expell them if they decide to carry out such a suit.

For some reason, you kiddies just won't understand that IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO COPY COPYWRITED MUSIC AND DISTRIBUTE. I don't know why you guys think that you have the inalienable right to defraud. Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should.

Why should the Universities protect the students? The students are given free access to university networks. What do they use it for? 80% to fuck around and play games, P2P and surf porn. The other 20% to do homework.

Fuck the students and fuck you stupid ripoff punks.

I believe that the subpoenaed students should decide to file lawsuits against the university since the university released students' records without PROPER subpoenas The Texas court ruled that joining John Doe Lawsuits for ex parte is not legal, there for the university illegally gave out information. "Education" in the Police States of Amerika is nothing more than a money making scam.
