Sony in trouble over Blu-ray
p2pnet.net news:- Back in March troubled Sony was compelled to fork out $97 million in damages and interest to the Immersion Corporation over the vibration technology that shakes video game controllers, said Sapa-AP.
Now, “While the two companies have since patched things up, Sony opted to leave rumble by the wayside when it was designing the PlayStation 3’s motion-sensing Sixaxis controller,” says GamesSpot, going on:
“The electronics giant couldn’t avoid patent headaches entirely, however, as Irvine, California-based Target Technology Company filed suit earlier this month, seeking damages for alleged patent violations relating to the Blu-ray technology used in the system.”
Named are Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony Pictures and Sony DADC named for allegedly allowing Blu-ray products to infringe on a patent it owns
The technology behind this patent involves coating optical discs with a thin film of silver-based alloy, which makes them more reflective and less susceptible to corrosion, says GamePro.com.
“Target Technology founder Han Nee claims to have personally developed this technology, which is currently in use with the majority of DVDs in production today,” it says, pointing out Target’s patent in the case is filed under U.S. Patent Number 7,018,696.
“Target does not specify in its suit whether it believes all of Sony’s Blu-ray discs infringe on its patent, or the suit applies to just a portion of the discs manufactured,” says GamesSpot.

Revenge is sweet.
It just proves how ridiculous patents and copyrights are. They stifle innovation at every level, public and corporate (although to call sony an innovator is somewhat specious).
