MySpace calls woman ’sex offender’

Says a caption on the ABC News site, “Nearly a week after MySpace wrongly labeled Jessica Davis, shown here with her fiance, a sex offender – mistaking her for a Jessica Davis in Utah, inset – no one from the social networking Web site has contacted her about the mistake.”
Was Davis’s fiance a sex offender? No. Nor was Davis.
MySpace promised to give certain US attorneys general details of registered sex offenders with profiles on the site.
But, “It took nearly a week for Jessica Davis [a 29-year-old University of Colorado senior, bottom pic] to get an explanation about why MySpace had labeled her a sex offender and pulled her profile from the social networking Web site,” says ABC News.
“And when her name was finally cleared, it wasn’t because of anything MySpace did.”
How did it all come about?
MySpace has a database partnership with Sentinel Tech Holding designed to, “weed out the profiles of registered sex offenders who may use an online profile to solicit targets,” as ABC News sums it up.
There was, however, a registered sex offender named Jessica Dawn Davis in Utah.
“By Thursday, Sentinel CEO John Cardillo had gotten involved, offering to ‘adjudicate’ Davis’ appeal himself, something he did in minutes when Davis called him directly Friday,” says the story, going on:
“The Jessica Davis in question is absolutely not a sex offender,” Cardillo told ABCNEWS.com, explaining that beyond sharing a similar and common name, Jessica Davis the non-sex offender and Jessica Dawn Davis the sex offender also had birthdays two days off as well as two years off and had lived in Florida at roughly the same time.
Cardillo, who called the initial match an”unfortunate circumstance,” said that the database worked exactly as intended.

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

Mark Lunsford thinks sex offenders should be killed; now his son’s on the way to becoming a sex offender. What is perplexing is that you can’t find a single reference to this case outside of the Ohio news item above; no major media outlets are covering it.

Brother Of Jessica Lunsford Faces Sex Charges

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The brother of 9-year-old rape and murder victim Jessica Lunsford was in a Clark County courtroom on Friday facing criminal charges.
Joshua Lunsford, 18, pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The charges stem from an alleged incident that occurred in March with a 14-year-old girl outside the Upper Valley Mall.
Joshua’s sister, Jessica, was killed by her Florida neighbor, John Couey, in 2005. Jessica’s family, including her brother live in Clark County.
A judge set Joshua’s bond at $5,000.

I hope she sues the pants off these people. My comment when this new first broke was it will be only a matter of time until they misidentify someone as a sex offender and the lawsuits will fly. The government needs to stay out of our homes unless you are all happy to live in a police state. This is just the tip of the iceberg unless this is halted quickly. Who will be the next targeted group? Perhaps anyone who talks about alcohol on their My Space? They could be a drunk driver you know…the whole thing is frightening if you give a care about living in a free country. Parents need to protect their children. We don’t need big brother in our living room.

Oh yeah, the Lunsford family is finding out what is like to have a loved one accused of being a child molester. I hope they’re happy now! Mark Lunsford and John Walsh need to step back and reasses their vigilante attitudes. My heart goes out to Joshua Lunsford, but the rest of them are getting just what they deserve. Jessica’s Laws would not have stopped John Couey, so perhaps they need to stop stomping the country to pressure every state to pass these laws, which are ineffective and unconstitutional. Does Mark Lunsford want his young son’s life permanently destroyed as he has advocated all over the country? He won’t be living near a school or park, he will be wearing a GPS for life, and he could serve many, many years in prison. Surely they don’t believe his crime deserves this kind of punishment!

easy to do and easy to get sympathy! When you sons and daughters get convicted and you have to support them because they cannot find a job and cannot do anything but live with you hmmm get the point?
