Warner Music puts videos online
p2pnet.net news:- Warner Music is to make its videos available for free online.
Well, not for free, exactly. To pay for your viewing pleasure, you’ll have to watch advertisements.
“The US giant says the deal will make it the first of the world’s four major music companies – Warner, Universal, EMI and Sony BMG – to supply its whole video archive online under a new business model that raises money via advertising,” says Guardian Unlimited, continuing:
“The web TV plans follow a series of online deals by music companies as they seek new revenue streams to fill the gap from dwindling CD sales. With the global music market in decline since 2000, record labels have been forced to look for advertising money around websites and by licensing tracks for use in commercials, TV shows and computer games.”
Maybe if they started treating their customers as reasonable people instead of accusing them of being potential criminals and thieves who have to be watched every minute of the day ……..
Against a “tough backdrop of rampant piracy and falling revenues, UK group EMI recently scrapped copy protection on all its digital tracks in a move that made them available on Apple’s new iTunes Plus site launched yesterday,” says story.
“Revenue will be driven by advertising, pay-per-download and letting other online platforms integrate Warner Music’s video programming into their sites,” says Bloomberg News. “There are also plans to develop subscription-based and mobile versions of the platforms, the international division of New York-based Warner Music Group Corp. said in a statement.
“Warner Music Group created a video unit and has made deals with Google Inc., including its YouTube unit, Brightcove Inc. and Joost Inc. to distribute music videos online as it tries to tap into new revenue streams. The company posted a wider second- quarter loss this month and said it will eliminate jobs as demand for CDs shrinks.”
Adds Guardian Unlimited:
“Strong appetites have been reflected in a buoyant live music scene and growing online networking around music, not least yesterday’s $280m acquisition of music site Last.fm by US broadcaster CBS.
“Still, some experts are predicting that rather than creating new opportunities for the major music labels, the web will make them increasingly redundant.”
