p2pnet.net OT news:- Hundreds of eight- to 15-year-olds have met in person someone they initially came across online, and one-in-20 still meet their new Net friends regularly, according to security firm Garlik.

But only 7% of parents were aware of this, says Garlik, quoted by raisingkids.co.uk.

“Although 90% of parents claimed that they monitored their children’s internet usage, over half of children interviewed said they surfed the net without their parents’ knowledge,” says the story, going on, “40% of children were visiting sites on the internet which were specifically forbidden by their parents.

“Most worryingly children were giving out personal information over the Internet, including full name (30%), home address (12%), and school details (46%) One in 10 admitted to being cyber-bullied – but only half said they had spoken to their parents about the ordeal.”

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!
