‘Pirates’ rakes it in
p2pnet.net news:- You know how all those wicked filesharing pirates are ruining Hollywood, and how profits are plummeting, and how untold numbers of support workers are losing their livelihoods, and etc and so on?
Admittedly, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is all over the p2p networks, and has been ever since it was released. But far from impeding the movie’s progress, the online exposure has probably added to its appeal and indeed it’s, “overwhelmed the international box office for the second consecutive weekend, making off with an estimated $105.4 million (53 million pounds) from 103 markets,” says Reuters.
“Its foreign total stands at $408.8 million. Worldwide, including North America, “At World’s End” has grossed $625.3 million to date.”
That’s what you call pirate treasure.
The music industry similarly claims file sharing is “devastating” it. However, Koleman Strumpf, from the University of Kansas, School of Business, and his colleague Felix Oberholzer, from Harvard University Business School, produced The Effect of File Sharing on Record Sales: An Empirical Analysis, the now-famous study just published in the Journal of Political Economy, 2007, which gave the lie to that assertion.
Quite a while back Strumpf told p2pnet he and his colleague are now doing a study on the movie industry.
It’ll be interesting to read their conclusions.

Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance.
