Yahoo ‘dismayed’ by China jailings
p2pnet.net news:- Yahoo which, along with Microsoft, Google, Cisco and other major corporations, is being criticised by human rights groups around the world for kowtowing to China, has repeated its message that it’s only trying to mesh with local laws.
Yahoo! is being sued for, among other things, its part in, “facilitating the arrest, imprisonment, and torture of Chinese internet users”.
But, “Yahoo! is dismayed that citizens in China have been imprisoned for expressing their political views on the Internet,” it says in a fax to Associated Press.
In the most current case, Yahoo is being sued by mother of Shi Tao, sentenced to 10 years in 2005 after sending an email about Chinese media restrictions.
“The company has acknowledged sharing information about Shi with Chinese authorities,” says AP, going on:
On Sunday in Hong Kong, Shi’s mother, Gao Qingsheng, insisted her son was innocent and that the family would press ahead with the legal action.
“I believe my son is innocent. We will fight until the end,” she told reporters.
The 61-year-old mother was in South Africa last week to receive the annual Golden Pen of Freedom prize on behalf of her son.
Before Shi’s mother announced her case, Yu Ling showed up in America saying she plans to sue Yahoo US for allegedly helping to put her husband, Wang Xiaoning , in jail in China.
