Computer crash in space
p2pnet.net OT news:- A computer crash 200 miles above Earth left three astronauts and engineers around the world wondering if something terrible was about to happen on board the international space sistation.
Critical life-support and navigation systems “went into meltdown,” says Times Online, going on, “An all-night recovery effort by ground controllers resulted in the partial restoration of computer functions,” but less than five minutes after the astronauts had climbed into their sleeping bags, “the fire alarm went off, forcing them back into emergency mode”.
Scientists think the system failure might be down to a bad power feed on the Russian side of the space station.
While they work to pinpoint the trouble, “cameras, computer laptops and some lights on Atlantis were turned off Thursday to save energy in case it needs to stay an extra day at the station to help maintain the outpost’s orientation while the problem with the Russian computers is addressed,” says Associated Press.
The mission had already been extended from 11 to 13 days to fix a thermal blanket that peeled during launch, it states.
