RIAA chops Avril Lavigne

p2pnet.net news:- “Toronto rock act Billy Talent was the big winner at the 18th annual MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto on Sunday, taking home three trophies. The band, which had led the nominations with five nods, won honors for top video, the MuchLoud top rock video for ‘Fallen Leaves’ and the people’s choice award for top Canadian band.

“Avril Lavigne won the best international video by a Canadian for ‘Girlfriend’ and the fan-voted favorite Canadian artist title, sparking tears from the often rambunctious Canadian pop star.”

The quotes come from the Hollywood Reporter, but what it doesn’t say is Talent and Lavigne are both members of the Canadian Music Creators Coalition (CMCC) , founded by artists who don’t agree with Warner Music, EMI, Vivendi Universal and Sony BMG that the way to encourage music lovers is to sue them.

Lavigne’s Girlfriend used to be on YouTube, but not any more …

… big thanks to the Big 4’s RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America).

Now, you find, This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by RIAA.

Talent’s Fallen Leaves is, however, still online. For now.

“We are the people who actually create Canadian music,” says the CMCC web site. “Without us, there would be no music for copyright laws to protect. Until now, a group of multinational record labels has done most of the talking about what Canadian artists need out of copyright. Record companies and music publishers are not our enemies, but let’s be clear: lobbyists for major labels are looking out for their shareholders, and seldom speak for Canadian artists. Legislative proposals that would facilitate lawsuits against our fans or increase the labels’ control over the enjoyment of music are made not in our names, but on behalf of the labels’ foreign parent companies.”

Slashdot Slashdot it!

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. What in the world is this article talking about? Normally I love this site’s reporting, but did they even check their facts on this one? A quick check of YouTube reveals multiple copies of the Avril video, the most prominent posted by RCARecords back in February with over 37 million views. The next one, posted by a regular user, has over a million views and is also perfectly live. The same goes for dozens of user created videos featuring the song. So what do you mean the video has has been taken down?

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Um I have to agree with the above poster. The video is still number 2. Probably the link to the video was a version put up by someone on there own. As I can understand people wanting to do that I prefer to see an official video and no dupes. I love how her video is the number 2 video on youtube and hope one day it will reach 1. But if several people upload it on their own then the views get spread out.

I didnt reallize the violation noted the RIAA by name I thought it was just a copyright violation. And although Avril and otehr artists dont agree with sueing their fans Im sure they still dont want it everywhere for free. Im sure if I posted a link to the cd on rapidshare on her myspace it would be removed.

At first I was pissed to read that YouTube had pulled it then calmed down when I saw the post and had to actually search for myself. I usally dont want to have to research news articles on my own to check their truthness, I guess Ill have to start keeping an open mind now a days.
