Vancouver Island to Facebook
p2pnet.net OT news special:- As regular p2pnet readers know, I live on Vancouver Island, about 1 1/2 hours by ferry off the coast of mainland British Columbia, Canada.
It’s a fantastic place —— fresh air, mountains, incredible scenery, an abundance of wildlife. We homeschool our daughter, Emma, and it’s a wonderful place for a child to grow up.
However, there’s one drawback: we’re always having to explain to people that we don’t live in Vancouver on the mainland.
WE LIVE ON VANCOUVER ISLAND, DAMNIT!!
And those of us who are Facebook members are having the same problem.
“We are Vancouver Islanders and proud of it! NO we do not live in “Vancouver’. We want to proudly claim ‘Vancouver Island’ as our network! Now, who’s with me….!!!”
That’s the intro to the ‘I don’t live in Vancouver’ petition demanding recognition for the island.
It includes a link telling Facebook admins, the only one in empowered to create official networks, “we need a Vancouver Island Network”.
“Keep at them!
They can’t ignore us forever… hehehe!”
They can’t, especially with 11,000 (and counting) members !!!!
Good luck finding Vancouver Island or Victoria on Facebook, says a feature in the Times Colonist.
Victoria is the capital of BC and one of the loveliest cities in the world, let alone in Canada.
On Facebook, you can find “Wenatchee, Wash., and Kalamazoo, Mich,” says the story. No problem. “Or – if you can find a computer with a reliable Internet connection in one of Earth’s poorest countries – there’s even Malawi, East Africa.”
But not Vancouver Island.
“Hello Islanders!” says Ruby Arnold, going on:
I’m the admin for the Victoria Network Petition. And I just wanted to give props to Leah, and all of our groups’ members.
I don’t know if the [Times Colonist] article will mean anything; on one hand it is media, and on the other, it seems pretty clear that the FB crew isn’t all that concerned with us anyhow.
Either way, we’ve made fantastic progress, and it can’t be too long before we finally get some recognition
Way to go!
Definitely stay tuned, especially if you live here on the island. AND IF YOU DO, sign up!!! ;P
Cheers!

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!
