Pownce pounces

p2pnet.net news:- Digg founder Kevin Rose has launched the beta of Pownce, something he describes as a social network, chat and file transfer network one one application.

It’s a, “way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends,” says the site

AllPeers or Tubes, anyone? But that’s cool. Competition ultimately benefits users.

Is it free?

Yes. No. Well, if you agree having to look at advertisements equals ‘free,’ then it’s free. Otherwise …

“As with most new ventures Pownce is in Private Beta the moment, you may however request an invitation for Beta testing from the Pownce web site,” says Rose. “The basic client is free and for $20 you can get a PRO version which increases file upload limits and disables advertising.”

For now, “At least to start, we’re keeping some control over registration so that we can scale the system under control,” says the site.

Powncers comprise Leah Culver, Daniel Burka, Kevin Rose and Shawn Allen (inorder of appearance) who, “formed a wee company with a great big name, Megatechtronium, that makes this software”.

Slashdot Slashdot it!

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

because there aren’t enough of these already, and for such good reason!

Of course, if there is a free version with ads and a cost version without, eventually someone will torrent the cost version anyway. In fact, it’s doubtful this program can replace torrent programs, so the filesharing aspects will not be so important to many people.

Kevin Rose is no dummy. I have a feeling that Pownce will revolutionize instant messaging apps one way or another. The first thing they should do is integrate it with digg so that they get a nice userbase and digg users finally get a way to send messages to each other.

“way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends”…what the difference between this and email???
