1.6 megawatts of RF at 2.6GHz – – that is a bit steep for a HMMWV to make, or carry.. klystrons are not too efficient. let’s look at that.

Ok, so there we have (((79000 * 44) * (0.000004)) * 200) = 2780.8 average watts of power consumed. Because it is a pulsed device. Now stipulating this to be correct and assuming my arithmetic is correct, the average power output is merely 1279 watts. This is easily sustainable by a 1.25 ton vehicle.

Now to the laser. I would ASS-U-ME that the laser is also pulsed along with the klystron. It would be needlessly inefficient otherwise.

From the article I guess that:
The microwave wavelength and therefore bunches of electrons are periodic and spaced aproximately 107mm apart.

It also makes sense that the pulse length and timing from the lasers would be synchronized with the klystron’s pulse timing and length.

The drawing is very simple. Perhaps more than two lasers would be used in order that the ring would not have to spin as fast.

The period of the rotation of the laser platform would need to be approximately ((1/T)/n) where T is the laser pulse width (optimally the same as the klystron’s pulsewidth) and n is the number of laser beams.

Some might question whether the bunches of electrons, which are moving very fast, could acurately be ‘covered’ by the laser beams.

Using a proper laser beam profile (shape) could create a seamless tube of light to conduct the microwave beam.

It is easy to visualize by disregarding the pulsed nature of the device. The drawing is partially deceptive because it shows moving dashed lines for the laser beams and a steady flow of RF cycles for the microwave beam. In reality the laser beam would appear a constant squirt as some 11,200 bunches exit the business end during a single 4uS pulse.

The laser is a Titanium Sapphire. Probably not very efficient. but with the short pulse length, it does not have to be.

Everything I’ve written is just from looking at the page here and thinking about it. It’s not rocket science.

This thing is possibly useful for all kinds of applications.

Where does one get big funding for one’s costly high-tech projects? Not from a welfare check and not from Greenpeace. So sure a government, any government in the world, would be interested in applications for its own defense, before writing checks for research.

The only pity is that due to the high peak power required for the system to even work, it would seem difficult to scale the project down to the level of amateur experimentation. At least I can enjoy reading the whole patent once I download it. It’ll be amusing to see how far off my technology guesses are.
