Medusa: space age weapon
p2pnet news OT special | off topic:- An ex-US Navy seal, the man who invented holographic storage, a games software programmer and a matter/anti-matter ray-gun which, had it been in existence on September 11, might have prevented at least some of the devastation ……….

Notes for characters in a sci-fi movie? No. They’re the members of a real-life team who conceived and created a new weapon, the first of its kind.
Simply put, it sends high energy electrons careening at light speed down a special barrel and deployed around airports or other strategic locations in 2001, it could have been aimed at the terror aircraft, disrupting or destroying their electronic systems.
Behind it are ex-Navy seal captain Bob Adams (left), until a year ago a member of the high-tech Seal Teams, Michael Thomas (centre) with a nuclear physics background, and well-known to regular p2pnet readers as the inventor of the holographic disk drive, and Jed Margolin, one of Atari’s original hardware engineers.
Now the Optima Technology Group, as the three call their new joint enterprise, has developed Medusa, so named because anything it ‘looks’ at is stopped dead in its tracks.
Powered by any standard diesel of the type found in an Army Hummer and/or a ground based diesel generator, for example, it’s currently in beta with the first major prototype slated for testing towards the end of the year.
This seemingly unlikely group of people came together when Adams was involved in a patent litigation case, “and I needed an expert in software and hardware,” he told p2pnet. “I found Jed and after that, Michael, they consulted, we became good friends, and we said let’s form a new company and do some interesting things.”
Jed Margolin already held the patent on the directed energy weapon.
Two years ago another company working in this field posted his patented technology on their web site, he says, “along, with 13 other patents and a disclaimer (in small type) saying the patents were being provided as background only. I found out about it when I received an email from one of the company’s investors asking if the company had the rights to my patent. They didn’t. We sent them a Cease and Desist letter and they removed all of the patents from their site.”
Crop Circles
How did he come up with the idea?
“I used to listen to the Art Bell show late at night and one of his favorite topics was Crop Circles,” he told p2pnet, going on:
Investigators determined that while some of the crop circles were obviously made by people dragging boards around the field others showed evidence of having been subjected to microwaves.
Since many of these crop circles had been made fairly quickly and without any reports of low-flying aircraft, I started wondering how to make a very tight microwave beam that would allow a high-flying aircraft to make a crop circle.
It doesn’t matter how crop circles are made. This comes under the category of, “That which is perceived as real is real in its consequences.”
The consequence was that, when I read a short item in Aviation Week & Space Technology about how a group at Los Alamos National Laboratory had developed a special kind of laser (one that produced a tightly focused ionized beam that could travel for long distances through the atmosphere) and were using it to discharge clouds to protect high-value assets from lightning strikes, I thought, “That sounds interesting, I wonder what else it could be used for.”
Then, when I was out for my nightly walk, I realized it could be used to make a waveguide for microwave energy and this tight beam could be used to make crop circles.
The leap from crop circles to energy weapons is a long one and, “I didn’t plan on becoming a weapons designer,” Margolin says, “but since this weapon gives the defense the advantage, I’m OK with it.
Interstellar mining
The ray-gun comprises the world’s first technology purpose-designed to control electron bunching outside a vacuum in air.
Normally, the electrons are collected or recaptured at the end of the klystron, a specialized vacuum tube. But by allowing them to stream freely to the high power microwave and high energy laser assembly, they’re turned into potentially lethal projectiles able to instantly destroy inorganic and organic material.
The klystron provides both the source of a high energy light speed electron particle beam, and a synchronous radio frequency so the electrons can align with the microwave transmitter output.
The main purpose isn’t only to use the microwave and laser electromagnetic fields (EMF), but also to provide a waveguide for keeping the electrons bunched together.
In normal air, the laser causes them to ionize, creating a linear circularized plasma field. But lasers bloom, or defocus, in air containing particulate matter, i.e. rain drops, dust or fog, and that, in turn, dramatically reduces their effectiveness. So the laser’s alternate purpose is to allow the electrons to move through the weapon assembly, safely preventing short circuiting of the electrons. And if the weather is good, the laser by itself will have an added deadly effect with high energy photon bombardment.
In addition, the high energy microwave part of the assembly is by itself capable of disabling and destroying unhardened targets.
The positive peaks of the alternating sine wave microwave pulses keep the electrons bunched during travel time to the target. The high energy laser and microwave coral the electrons and make sure the highly concentrated electron density patterns arrive at the target to completely ionize molecular matter by extreme high voltage discharge, causing particle breakdown and molecular disintegration.
Meanwhile, as with the thousands of other devices and systems which started out as weapons, the possibilities for non-military uses are endless.
Thomas says he’s excited about the possibilities for peaceful applications.
For example, “You could use it for interstella mining,” he says. “Bombard particles and cut pieces off asteroids. And we have other things in mind we don’t want to talk about just yet.”
“With Michael and Jed collaborating, who knows what else they’ll come up with?” - wonders Adams.
Definitely stay tuned.

Well if the US Gov knew about this DE weapon and it looks like they did, then why would they allow all those people to be killed verse shooting the planes down?
It stinks that we have such technology but do not use it in Iraq nor against those who wish to harm us in the US, instead they waste money and lives of our GIs just to keep the party in power! Impeach GWB for war crimes
August 20th, 2007 at 1:54 am
@Dough:
1. Iraq is not hurting the USA in any possible way, its on the other way around and the reason is oil.
2. Because the government made the deal to take those towers down. (it really isn’t a conspiracy theory today, since only the government says not (and they aren’t reliable anyway))

GWB impeach? That is way light… How about everyone in the whitehouse get charged with TREASON.
The Pentagon wants a budget of $140BILLION dollars for the next 12months of the “war”. The “RIGHT” signs off on this, saying Bush loves Jesus and good for our military… yet these same people scream and yell if a single mother needs gets more than $50 a month for food stamps because poor people SHOULD not have handouts! Only the rich should get them! Power companies and Oil companies getting kick-backs and funding, and they’re making a profit.
They should be tried and conviceted for treasons for:
- 3780+ US men and women (As of Sept 15 2007)
- 27,753 = Wounded, how many are severe (Missing body parts, blind, brain damage, burns, etc) thousands:
http://icasualties.org/oif_a/CasualtyTrends.htm
They (Team GWB) have lied, and forced this war… remember what France and other countries were saying before the bombs dropped? That the EVIDENCED was flawed! How about the ex-CIA agent whose cover was BlOWN by the whitehouse? Because they DIDN’T find the WMDs that was never there.
- Lied about the WMDs
- ignored bin-ladden.
- No war plan
- No after-war plan
- Purposely ignored the “fasle evidence” which was stated as being such BEFORE we invaded IRAQ. Even on NASA cable access there were playing such tapes (strange) with CIA and other intel people stating that there WAS no evidence to attack Iraq and that cheney was constantly trying to get them to make stuff up. Take a little thread of info, and blow it up, etc.
- ignored the terrorist report before 9/11 - oh yeah, GWB can’t read. Thats why the report was ignored.
The TROOPS are doing the best they can - but the President has screwed them royally. And you know what, MOST of our guys over there KNOW that they were being screwed. But when you are in the US Armed forces, you are NOT allowed to talk ill-will of the Furher. Hmmmm… what happened “freedom of speech”? Oh yeah, GWB hates freedom.
And Collin Powell have been not run for office. he’s a liar with the rest of them.

Sorry guys, but it’s a total bullcrap what ypu write here. I didn’t even had to read the whole article to understand it. First, electrons can not be accelerated to the speed of light, that’s just impossible. Second, this animation with hummers destroying tanks is bullcrap too. Do you know, how much energy do you need to actually destroy something with an electron beam?! A generator coupled to a diesel engine won’t be enough for it.
October 11th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
read the book mortal engines it hints towards a weapon called medusa the blows up stuff
also read up about the bermuda triangle—i think medusa might have something to do with that

the plane that hit the pentagon on 9/11 disapeared——MEDUSA???
October 19th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
The plane that hit the Pentagon disappeared? What? You could see parts of the plane sticking out of the building wreckage in the video after it hit. They found seats with body parts still strapped into them deep inside the building. They found the engine parts inside the building. There was a pile of debris outside the building. The plane disappeared? How did they find the black boxes (data and voice both) if it ‘disappeared’?
You cannot accelerate physical electrons to near light speed. Radio waves propagate at near light speed, but the electrons themselves do not. That is why they can predict solar storms in advance of their occurrence. The image of the solar disturbance reaches the earth long before the stream of high energy particles. Klystrons are not exotic parts. They have been used in radio transmission forever.
Bermuda Triangle? Myth. The area gets bad storms and has some strong ocean currents. So some ships and planes got stuck in bad weather over the years. People take that and create wild stories.

you are such a dumbass, it is people like you who will lead man kind to its death.
beware odin!!

wow this is the biggest bunch of autodidatic idiots I have ever seen. None of you have any idea what you’re talking about and all of you insist its totally true.

you are such a geek, who says “autodidatic” these days?
who cares how they made medusa? just try and survive it!!!

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
- Dr. Arthur C. Clark
It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.
- Albert Einstein
Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a person does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses their intelligence.
- Albert Einstein
Today’s science fiction is often tomorrow’s science fact.
- Dr. Stephen Hawking
Long experience has taught me this about the status of mankind with regard to matters requiring thought: the less people know and understand about them, the more positively they attempt to argue concerning them, while on the other hand to know and understand a multitude of things renders men cautious in passing judgment upon anything new.
- Galileo
Thank God,,,, none of the looney toons like “Reader’s” pooh poohing this technology are scientist or mankind is DEAD !

LOL this evil empire of America is trying take over the Earth. I find the American militaristic behaviour and focus on new weapons of mass killing disgusting. Thank god this particular weapon would not work in real life. But the mere idea….
What is it you americans want? Swallow up the whole world? Who is threatening you? You possess the largest military might in the world, the so-called Al-Qaida is a tiny worm compared to you…..
Who is responsible for the largest amount of killings of civilians in the world every year? The U.S. army. The numbers speak for itself. To stop terrorism would be to stop the U.S. army who is killing ten thousands of people every year with their cowardly high-tech weapons. Most of the daily kills in Iraq are made U.S. troops, not the insurgents. Tons of airbombs are dropped on Iraqis every day.
PS: Everybody knows 9/11 was a setup. Everyone can see all the floors collapsing SIMULTANEOUSLY which is only possible using demolition explosives. How dumb can one be LOL
February 19th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
That’s BS. The military is not to blame, its the GWB administration. The only reason that idiot got elected is that no one good ever runs. The other representative was even worse. 9/11 a setup? Yeah right. No one would kill thousands for a setup. America an empire? Other nations are just as bad. The U.K., France, Japan, India, etc. all have nukes too. Besides, the world was happy that the Americans had nukes to end WWII and stop the Soviets from blasting us into oblivion. As for Al Qaeda, they’ve killed and terrorized enough people for the U.S. to want to do something about it. Bush might have made some dumb mistakes, but don’t blame a whole country for it.
March 26th, 2008 at 12:04 am
Thank you finally someone is speaking sensibly! Its amazing to me how I hear this constant “Oh the evil Americans are trying to take over everything!” bullshit. If we try to leave you alone then you bitch and complain about us if we try to help then we are trying to take over, essentially we are only evil until you need us right? Oh and the cowardly crack? That idiotic bullshit is barely worth a response but just cause Im in a good mood I will, cowardly is not removing a dictator from power, cowardly is flying planes into buildings and murdering innocent civilians. The simple damn truth is that if America wanted middle eastern Oil or just to take over in general we wouldn’t bother to hide it, we would just take what we wanted with little to no effort at all. If the entirety of the Middle East allied and threw all of its millitary might against us we would still swat them within a month maximum.
Largest amount of civilian killings per year is the US army? Damn that blunt your puffing on must be some good shit my friend for you to hallucinate facts like that. Try again the largest number of civilian killings per year from a nation come from China then the Middle East. Jesus H Christ the US are terrorists trying to swallow up the world now? Get your facts straight kid if you are going to make a dumb-fuck claim like that then at least get your facts straight, as I said before if we wanted the world we would have it and only China and Russia are even close to a real threat to that. I have to wrap this up so im just going to take a wild guess and say your french and less than 20 years old because if you are of a legal age in your country which Im still positive is France then you honestly need to kill yourself just so you don’t infect the gene-pool anymore than it already is over there. So to sum up I would like to state for the record that I am a US soldier and I would like to officially say fuck you to FromEU from Fort Bragg
April 7th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
From what I can see none of you really have a firm grip on reality. To speculate on things like 9/11 being a conspiracy and the governments intentions in the middle east without haveing actually been there and without having any reliable inside knowledge as to what actually happened or what the “real” reason for the war in Iraq is, is just that SPECULATION. We could argue about who believes what all day but the fact of the matter is that we just dont know all the details because we as American citizens allow our government too much control. Has anyone stoped to think that this country was founded on the basis of minimal government a place where individuals can make a life for themselves as they choose. Not a place where everyone is entitled to healthcare or retirement. A place for people with drive and initiative to create there own destiny and not have to rely on a central government.
As for “Reader’s”, you sound like an educated individual but just a bit on the sceptic’s side you might consider the grey. Not everything operates in black and white and science does’nt have an explaination for everything in this quantum world we live in. All I am trying to say is that the truth lies in balance not all facts not all fiction, but the proper balance of both.
May 1st, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Americans are not Evil at all. GWB made terrible mistakes but it is 2 late 2 leave Iraq now if we do the Mock-government we set up there will collapse in a few months and turn Iraq into Anarchy. So yes Iraq WAr bad Idea, leaving now, worse idea.
9/11 a setup, I doubt it.
GWB was elected because he uses alot of Propaganda, like saying WEapons of Mass destruction, Terrorist, and saying that he defends people and stuff. It is propaganda. simply it makes people trust him and follow him.
Also American may be the strongest nation in the World, but if things here keep going as they have been I guarantee we will collapse in a matter of decades, not because of Invasion or terrorists but because of Internal problems. The United States Economy is failing, Crime in the United States is among the Highest in the World.
Our Justice system sucks, we let too much get by and punishments are not severe enough to make anyone fear punishment. Plus with Gangs growing eventually they will begin to take a stronger seat in our government, maybe even getting political offices.
So I would be willing to put money on the fact that within 100 years the Great United States wont be anything like it is today, Politically,Socially,Economically or Militaristically.
and about this Medusa bs, thats exactly what it is: BS!
The Idea is interesting but it needs some Modifications to the Theory.

we soldiers always get the fucking blame for what the general tells us to do in afgahnistan, we just take orders so don’t blame us you retarded fuckers
June 6th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
are you stupid, or just American?
June 27th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
The description of this thing is total crap. The guy is just using complicated sounding terminology so people with think he knows what he is talking about. Particle beam weapons dont work at atmospheric pressure, they are subject to streaming instabilities etc. not to mention for a relativistic beam of electrons trying to propagate with the earths magnetic field you have a larmor radius of about 60 meters so the particles would just go in a circle and come back an hit the hummer.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
none -
The fact that you claim “the plane that hit the pentagon on 9/11 disappeared” proves that you are a Idiot, so when you call someone stupid it really has no weight behind it.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:04 pm
an american calling me in idiot, ha. i’m not being racist or anything… but shut the fuck up and go play with your chemistry you retarded american ass.
September 29th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Interesting to note another poster mentioned Mortal Engines. Great book, great series.
America needs to stop being World Police. I noticed some one used the phrase “If we try to leave you alone then you bitch and complain about us”. LOL?
Fuck off, sort out your economy, your education system, and come back when you have a culture.
If you guys really wanted Osama, you’d have put troops on the ground to start off with.
And do you guys seriously think GWB has anything to do with it? He couldn’t string a bloody speech together, let alone mastermind the events of the past few years.
Insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq are not conventional armies. You do not have a set amount, killing them one by one does not reduce their number. You need to think of something else.
October 19th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
get a life
