Apple denies UMG breakup rumours
p2pnet news | music:- According to Apple, reports that its marriage with Vivendi Universal’s UMG has been annulled aren’t accurate.
Rather, it says, the two companies are merely negotiating.
“A favoured tactic of UMG boss Doug Morris is to negotiate with bludgeon in hand,” p2pnet said yesterday. Or, put another way, kick them in the spheroids and while they’re writhing, offer new terms.
The technique works for France’s Vivendi, as similar negotiations it’s conducted in the past have shown.
“Their [UMG's] music is still on iTunes and their not re-signing is just not true,” the San Francisco Chronicle has Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr declaring.
“Instead, Universal planned to continue its partnership with iTunes at will, letting the record company negotiate exclusive deals with other music services if those opportunities came up,” says the story. “For instance, it could grant exclusive rights to a new song to an online music service for several months before releasing it to iTunes and other retailers.”
A spokesman for Universal declined to comment, it adds.
