p2pnet comment spam: canned

p2pnet news | announcement:- Hi all:

The comment spam problem has been dramatically reduced now p2pnet is running under WordPress.

It used to be that first thing in the morning, I’d manually delete scores of comment spams which had escaped the (hated) verification system.

Thanks to Akismet Spam, though, that’s a thing of the past. The application cleverly identifies 99% of the garbage and marks it for deletion.

But there’s a slight problem.

I haven’t been using Akismet for long but already it’s identified almost 6,000 incomings. This means hardly a day goes by without the arrival of hundreds of new spam comments.

Theoretically, I should go through every one of them just to make sure a genuine post hasn’t been inadvertently flagged. I do my best but frankly, I just don’t have the time to be as diligent as I perhaps should be.

So if you’ve sent in a comment post and it hasn’t turned up, it probably wasn’t you: it may have been accidentally chopped.

However, having said this, I don’t think that’s happened very often and I’m pretty sure 99.99999% of regular readers will agree that having an effective spam killer around is a whole lot better than having to prove you’re human by entering five letters and numbers, like you had to do under the old system.

Cheers!
Jon

Comment spam is a real nightmare. I run a phpbb forum and my biggest problem is automated sign-up’s with spam links in the profile. I tried a validation script similar to your former system but still they got through. Maybe I should think about switching software.

    Hey Baggy:

    “a real nightmare”.

And that’s understating it. But as Akismnet says, “People have already begun implementing Akismet for other systems and platforms ….

    Cheers!

  3. Drake Says:

Don’t bother going through all that spam. People will re-post their comments if they notice that they don’t appear. If Akismet starts to fail, try to use it in combination with these two scripts:

I never had my post deleted so far but even if this was hapening it would be a small price to pay for having a readable forum and keep this parasites at bay. There is too many parasites in our societies and the entertainment “Industryyy!” is full of them In any case thank you for your great job and the service your are giving to humanity Jon! We need more people like you!

  5. Reader's Write Says:

In all this time, I think maybe I’ve had one post not show up that I couldn’t account for what happened. Most of them by far were due to that verification system. There have been days when after 10-11 attempts I threw up my hands in disgust and didn’t make the post. That happened more than once. I was thankful that the potential post didn’t get deleted between tries as it did at first.

I might bitch from time to time but I can live with the lost post far easier than the verification.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

“There have been days when after 10-11 attempts”

Ya right! Don’t listen to him this is BS.

  7. Andy Says:

The verification system would have been okay if it had avoided the use of “0″s and “O”s and “o”s and “l”s and “1″ and “I”s. Saying in words whether it was case-sensitive would have helped, too. The system sucked, but it didn’t have to, it would have been fine if it had been done thoughtfully.

  8. Reader's Write Says:

That wasn’t BS about the verification failures. They don’t always display right in Firefox, giving you the guess of whether that is a 1 or an I, a O or a 0, as examples. You get those one behind another in the verification it’s anyones guess as to which it is.

I’m a long time poster here, loving the idea that I don’t have to drop my email or nick just to post. If you’ve been around here enough you’ll remember those posts I’ve made with a
    * xx attempts at verification.

Those comments were made because if you don’t speak up, how will Jon ever know there is a problem with the solution?

  9. Ray Beckerman Says:

    I agree with Drake.

Don’t worry about it. People will repost if it gets misplaced.

    The new system is GREAT!!!

    Keep up the good work!!!

  10. db0 Says:

Alas, such is the price of fame and anonymous posts in the intarnets. I guess you haven’t managed to activate Bad Behaviour after all eh?

  11. Jon Says:

True, but not from want of trying: it keeps reporting, ‘Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.’

    Cheers!
