Intel’s latest hottie

p2pnet news | product news:- How fast is fast? And how extreme is extreme? Like, really, how much difference does it really make?

A lot, believes Chipzilla, and accordingly, it’s begun shipping its first Intel Core 2 Extreme mobile dual-core processor, “adopting the same branding as the firm’s high-end desktop processors” with quad-core versions slated for next year, says PC Pro.

“The new flagship mobile chip – the Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800 – will run at 2.6GHz per core, has 4MB of L2 cache and an 800MHz front-side bus,” says the story, pointing out:

“Intel has also removed the overspeed protection from the new processor, a feature that should have performance enthusiasts dribbling into their breakfasts.

“This means end users and manufacturers will be able to tweak the new processor to make it run faster, though exactly how fast it will go is yet to be seen.”

It, “runs hotter than the Core 2 Duo line as well at 44 watts, but since it can go into very deep sleep if you don’t need the full power of the two cores, the battery life hit may be mitigated,” says PC World, adding:

“The new chip works with the Santa Rosa 965 chip set, so users get all of those improvements, which include draft-n Wi-Fi, gigabit ethernet, and better integrated graphics. Given the target market, though, expect most notebooks with the X7800 to use a separate graphics solution to maximize performance.”

The first new notebooks should be out by the end of the month, says the story, with others following in August.

“Expect HP to be one of the first out of the gate, with Asus and Dell shortly thereafter, according to industry sources,” it adds.
