Cross-browser Firefox/IE flaw worsens
The browser flaw which allows attackers to hijack a computer by using Internet Explorer to launch Firefox is affecting other applications as well. Security researchers Nate McFeters, Billy Rios and Raghav Dube have disclosed information and working exploit code for a similar vulnerability in Trillian. Like the Firefox attack, the Trillian exploit uses a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) function as the point of attack.
Microsoft patents the mother of all adware systems
It’s such a tremendously bad idea that it’s almost bound to succeed. Microsoft has filed another patent, this one for an “advertising framework” that uses “context data” from your hard drive to show you advertisements and “apportion and credit advertising revenue” to ad suppliers in real time. Yes, Redmond wants to own the patent on the mother of all adware.
Warner Music Group Corp. said late Tuesday that it has decided not to make a last-minute takeover offer for EMI Group Plc. In a statement after the market close, the company didn’t provide specific reasons. However, it said it “reserves the right to announce an offer or possible offer for EMI or make or participate in an offer or possible offer for EMI … within the next six months in circumstances where an announcement is made by or on behalf of EMI or a third party (which for the avoidance of doubt includes Mr. Jim Fifield) relating to the making of an offer for EMI by a party other than Maltby Limited.”
EA, Microsoft in executive trade
Electronic Arts and Microsoft are doing something of an executive swap. EA announced today that is hiring Peter Moore, formerly the head of Microsoft’s games division, to be president of its sports division. Meanwhile, Microsoft has hired Don Mattrick, EA’s former president, to replace Moore.
