Blackberry 8820: WiFi and cellular
p2pnet news | mobiles:- Canada’s Research In Motion (RIM) has come up with an interesting new configuration for its ubiquitous mobile.
The Blackberry 8820 smartphone will work on both cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
It supports the 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi standards and functions with both BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Service allowing it to seamlessly switch between cellular and Wi-Fi network so users can access email, Instant Messaging, organizer, web browsing and other mobile data applications, says Mobility Today.
Is RIM worried about Apple’s iPhone?
Not according to the Financial Post, which spoke with RIM co-chief executive Mike Laziridis.
“Hats off to [Apple CEO Steve] Jobs for growing the whole industry,” it has him stating.
The double purpose BlackBerry 8820 will be launched by AT&T in the US later this summer, “although RIM said more would be added over the next few weeks,” says the story, adding:
“A number of North American wireless carriers, including Canadian companies, have blocked such features on cellphones from other manufacturers because they eat into voice minute revenue.”
No prices were given.
