Toshiba’s new Sony battery recall
p2pnet news | product news:- Toshiba has put application online to check if its laptops are vulnerable to possible battery problems, and which tells users if that’s the case.
In the background, Toshiba recently announced, “further measures to encourage greater customer participation in the global program to replace certain Sony battery packs installed in some Toshiba portable computers”.
Now it’s announced another call-back and although this time around only 10,000 batteries are affected, “the company said it decided to carry out the recall because of incidents in the past several months that resulted in fires,” says the IDG News Service, going on there was a much larger recall of Li-ion batteries last year for an unrelated manufacturing defect.
“Both recalls are related to battery packs manufactured by Sony,” says IDG. “However, Toshiba warns that even if you participated in the earlier battery swap back then, you still need to deal with this recall if you have one of the affected batteries,” it warns.
Says Toshiba:
Over a relatively short period, certain incidents occurred where certain battery packs installed in Toshiba portable computers caught fire. Based on its investigation, Sony Corporation, supplier of the subject battieries, it was concluded that certain battery cells manufactured in a specific manufacturing lot could be affected by a certain issue that could potentially lead to a safety issue. According to investigation of the battery supplier, this Recall program should be limited to the manufacturing lot of the battery cells covered by this notice. Toshiba decided to launch a new recall program for the battery packs identified by the battery supplier as containing the battery cells manufactured in the specific manufacturing lot.
Toshiba strongly recommends that customers participate in this new battery pack replacement program as soon as possible.
The subject battery packs will be replaced free of charge. This offer extends only to replacement of the subject battery packs, and does not include replacement of any Toshiba computer. Please see the list of models below to determine whether a Toshiba product you own may be eligible for battery pack replacement.
The recalls affects Satellite A100/A105 and Tecra A7 laptops, plus some, but not all, accessory/replacement batteries numbered PA3451U-1BRS and PA3399U-2BRS, says Toshiba.
Anyone who’s worried can download the Battery Check Utility, run it and follow the simple on-screen instructions, or check the battery manually, says the company, adding if you need help with the identification process, call the Toshiba global support center at 800-457-7777.
