First (and last ;) of the day
Hi all:
Proving that computers aren’t the only things to get bugs, there’s a stomach virus going around in my part of the world and I’ve been battling it all week, with not entirely successful results. That’s why I signed off early yesterday.
I’m going kick back this weekend, so other than this, there’ll be no posts today. But normal service will resume on Monday - I hope
For now, below are shorts on stories I would have posted on.
Cheers! And all the best ….

YouTube Preps Video Fingerprinting
YouTube hopes recognition technology will be in place in September to stop the posting of copyrighted videos on the popular Web site, a lawyer Friday told a judge presiding over copyright lawsuits. The lawyer, Philip S. Beck, told U.S. District Judge Louis L. Stanton in Manhattan that YouTube was working “very intensely and cooperating” with major content providers on a video recognition technology as sophisticated as fingerprint technology the FBI uses.

With Tools on Web, Amateurs Reshape Mapmaking
With the help of simple tools introduced by Internet companies recently, millions of people are trying their hand at cartography, drawing on digital maps and annotating them with text, images, sound and videos. In the process, they are reshaping the world of mapmaking and collectively creating a new kind of atlas that is likely to be both richer and messier than any other.
Sky signs deal to offer PSP downloads
Sky has formed a joint venture with Sony to offer video-on-demand and films for the now blossoming Portable PlayStation handheld. Although the device has been lagging behind Nintendo’s DS in terms of sales, this latest announcement, coupled with the possibility of a PS2/PS3 control adaptor, is seen as a positive step for the device.
Wikia Acquires Grub, A Distributed Web Crawler Tool
Jimmy Wals, the co-founder of Wikipedia and chairman of Wikia, announced at O’Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) that Wikia has acquired Grub, a web crawler, in order to build a new search-platform based on open-source protocol. Grub was developed by LookSmart and unlike other crawler it operates donating their personal computing resources towards a common goal. This means that users can download and install Grub and then allow it to operate as a background process on their computers.
