The reason your test worked through the VPN is not because the traffic shaping was unable to detect the torrent ports, it is because the VPN is likely prioritized by your ISP and given a higher priority than the torrent and other ports.. ISP's do not cause bit comet to disconnect.. Bit Comet is just too stupid to realize that when it runs out of, or over consumes bandwidth it slows to a craw.. It appears to mistake that for a drop in the connection.. That simply is not the case..

Your exercise here is completely flawed..

Bitlord is not "malware", its also a very old program, made from bitcomet .5x version, and isn't relevant to this topic.

No one mentions that the bitlord malware client uses the same code base as bitcomet. That's why it's reputation is dirt. And of course, it's bloated compared to other clients such as utorrent, rtorrent.

"# Reader's Write Says:
August 1st, 2007 at 7:36 pm

If all true, it takes version 0.9x or newer to get one that behaves. How old/popular is 0.9x?"

I will reply to this as Mr. Topolski has already replied to this question in our forum.

"No. It should be understood as "FALSE IN TESTED VERSIONS 0.90 and 0.91, NOT TESTED (NO DATA) IN OTHER VERSIONS."

One question I've already received is "Why did you only test the later versions?"

The reason is both time and relevance.

BitComet has had dozens of releases, and I do not have the time, interest, or energy in testing them all.

The way any issues are fixed in all software is to release updates. So, even if an issue was found to exist in an earlier version, the natural question of concern becomes, "Is this still a problem?" or worse, "Was this a bug or is it a design decision?" This paper is intended to provide data to the BitTorrent community that is useful making a decision now, so it primarily endeavors to answer the question "Is (not 'was') BitComet a bad player in the BitTorrent community?"

In a few cases, some of the accusations themselves, or the data found during my investigation, allowed me to conclude that an issue was never true without having to test any previous versions. But for the issues that required testing, the most relevant information is how the application behaves now."

Now, to address your question of how new version 90 is, I will refer you to our release notes...

http://bitcomet.com/doc/changelog.htm

Your statement that it takes version 90 or newer to get one that "behaves" is not correct. There is no evidence, nor valid claims that I'm aware of regarding any version other then .60. Also, on behalf of our developers, you should consider that "DHT" (distributed hash table) was NOT part of bittorrent protocol, and was a newly developed feature that has been added by some of the more advanced clients. BitComet was among the first to implement this technology, and to be fair, they didn't break any "rules" because there were no rules regarding dht at that time. However, we do concede that version .60 did have a bug, and it was addressed in a timely manner.

On behalf of the Bit Comet team, we thank Mr. Topolski for his objective analysis and hard work. We were anticipating his report, be it good, or bad, as too many unfounded claims have been made without any evidence.
