Meet the g(for Google)Phone
p2pnet news | mobiles:- Back in March, the word was out that Google was working on a mobile phone. Specs, albeit limited?
Blackberry-like, slick device- C++ core w/ OS bootstrap (some version of Linux?)
- Optimized Java running on the C++ core
- Vector-based presentation courtesy of Skia’s technology
- Many services, including VoIP
The description appeared on Simeon Simeonov’s blog, which seems to have been taken down since then.
Nonetheless, that’s the phone on the right, from Engadget, and superimposed is a picture from a CNN Money story, quoting the Wall Street Journal which in turn cites “unnamed sources”. The CNN pic is captioned, “Google is entering the fight for your wireless service and could change how you access the Internet …”
Because, “Google is injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into its mobile phone project and is currently in discussion with mobile operators in both Europe and the US, according to newspaper reports,” says Reuters, also referencing the WSJ, going on:
Google is injecting hundreds of millions of dollars into its mobile phone project and is currently in discussion with mobile operators in both Europe and the US, according to newspaper reports.
“We’re partnering with carriers, manufacturers and content providers around the world to bring Google search and Google applications to mobile users everywhere,” DigitalArts has Google spokesman Michael Kirkland stating.
“What our users and partners are telling us is that they want Google search and Google applications on mobile, and we are working hard every day to deliver that,” Kirkland said.
And it’s all about —— advertising.
“Advertising on cell phones is a fast-growing market, and Google has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to capture a chunk of it,” says CNN.
“Google’s mobile phone plan could offer features, such as its search engine and maps on certain phones,” it goes on.
But, “While Google’s powerhouse brand could drive customers to wireless carriers like AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile, the carriers are reluctant to give up control of the mobile advertising market,” it goes on.
Meanwhile, “Apple and Google see the status quo in North America as holding back the spread of mobile Internet usage, and thus their own growth, so both are moving to fundamentally change the business,” says Canada’s Financial Post.
“Given the gargantuan market capitalization and brand power of both companies, industry experts say a wireless future ruled by Apple and Google – not the likes of AT&T Inc. and Rogers – is imminent.”
