The Searchamabob thingamabob
p2pnet news | product news:- Sites such as p2pnet need search capability and for the moment, we’re using Google. But we’d have preferred to have been able to offer a choice.
After all, Google isn’t the only game in town.
Now our friend Ran Geva in Israel, the guy who built Peer2Mail, has come up with an option. It’s neat little widget called Searchamabob and we’re trying it today on p2pnet for the first time.
In effect, it’s an in-text search engine which’ll let you launch your enquiry without having to leave the page you’re on.
Highlight text appearing anywhere on p2pnet, and you’ll see a little ‘i’ appear in a box beside it. Click the box and in an opaque panel, you’ll see a selection of search engines. Click the enquiry you’re interested in and it’ll immediately take you to a selection of finds.

And you can add the search engine or engines of your choice.
You’ll also see Omgili, another of Geva’s creations. It’s a search engine created to index web-based discussion forums. It’s customizeable and its, “unique algorithm analyzes forums not as a simple web page, but as an active discussion with a title, topic and replies,” he told p2pnet when Omgili (Oh my God, I love it!) was still in beta.
AND you’ll see a link to Omgili’s new Buzz Graph comparison graph, used to assess the popularity of a given subject.
On Searchamabob, can you exclude certain parts of your page from showing Searchamabob? Yup. Just surround the text with a span/div element with the ID “no_searchamabob”, ie, <span id=”no_searchamabob”>No Searchamabob here…</span>
Does Searchamabob collect information about the site it’s on, or users? Definitely not.
Is it (shudder) advertising supported? No way!
OK. But will you be selling ads on it? – we asked Geva.”Nope,” he answered. “It’s just a cool widget I thought would be useful and so I developed it
How do you use it? Just put the code below at the end of your HTML (just before the </body>)
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=”JavaScript” src=”http://www.omgili.com/Searchamabob.js”></SCRIPT>
