San Francisco WiFi: on or off?
p2pnet news | WiFi:- San Francisco’s flirtation with WiFi is a “fiasco” which, “may end the same way a summer of free love did some 40 years ago: with broken promises and a mean hangover”.
So says Forbes, going on that the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, “put off a vote to approve a contract with EarthLink to set up a wireless network as it dickered with the company over the deal terms”.
Meanwhile, “a struggling EarthLink is now reviewing its municipal wi-fi plans as it tries to push its way back to profitability,” it says.
San Francisco’s citizens will be able to say what they think about the municipal WiFi network, says Ars Technica.
“San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom and Board of Supervisors president Aaron Peskin agreed to put the question of whether to go forward with building a free, citywide wireless network to the city’s residents for a vote in November.”
Back in 2005, Google was among more than a dozen suitors looking to put the city online with free WiFi.
