Text ads on p2pnet: not
p2pnet news | Advertising:- A little while ago I posted an item saying I was about to start running text ads in p2pnet.
“Because if p2pnet is to stay online it has to pay for itself in one way or another,” I said. “p2pnet isn`t an entrepreneurial or business site. It’s a commitment: an attempt to unspin at least some of the terribly distorted corporate material disguised as news and information.”
I don’t have anything against advertising per se – it’s the grease which keeps the wheels of commerce turning – but I hate in-your-face ads and all efforts to force advertising down people’s throats by any means.
Advertisers must think these kinds of promotions work, or they wouldn’t be spending literally billions of dollars on them. But I have my doubts. I believe readers would be far more inclined to pay attention if advertisers treated then with a little respect.
Textual advertising where certain words are keyed to associated products or services seemed to me to be a reasonable way to go, but I really dislike ads which pop a box up, getting in the way of what you’re trying to read, and that’s the way some text ads work.
I thought I’d found a way around it with a built-in delay so the ads weren’t activated the instant a mouse passed over them.
But now I find the company’s assertions to the contrary notwithstanding, it can’t be done – at least, not at the moment.
So with great reluctance because believe me, I really need the $, I’ve had to cancel the arrangement and it’s back to square one.
Cheers!
Jon

I really appreciate your views on discreet advertising – cheers Jon. I use Maxthon’s ad-blocker (content and pop-up) extensively, yet have always allowed your ads to go through, because they actually add to your site’s appeal.
If you get those squiggly line ads running with the delay, you can be sure that I will unblock Intellitxt for your site. They are currently blocked for all other sites.
Kudos, dude.

I run firefox with adblock plus and filterset.g plugins , and i never see any ads, it blocks them all for me
I also disable animations and flash. It’s actually a joy to surf now

Oh, I’d suggest a 1.5 second delay, if possible. I feel it offers the right balance between avoiding unwanted pop-ups and getting frustrated waiting for them to appear when wanted.

I would be okay with any type of text ads.

You could get onboard something like http://www.text-link-ads.com. These are not intrusive and people buy them mostly because of the ranks, not just traffic, so it could be a good additional solution to what you already have, if you manage to sell well.
Cheers

If you are seeking money tell people how much you need each year (approximately) when people relies how much is actually needed i find people more willing to donate. Also possibly state that any left over money at the end of each year will go to charity/good cause(EFF). Finally offer a PO box where people can send cash

Hi Danijel:
I tried those but the income was dismal. But thanks for the thought.
Meanwhile. I haven’t given up on the ads I stopped yesterday.
Cheers!

Go ahead and do the ad thing Jon
I’ve learned over the years to be careful where I have my mouse pointer.
Plus you need to eat, and personally I don’t find text ads that bad, even if they are instant popup ones
Afterdawn added them in to make more money to cover costs, people complained but they got over it in time.
