iMac: more Yawn than Wow!

p2pnet news | product news:- Apple has released a new iMac but the mainstream media, normally ready to hype Apple to the skies, aren’t going quite as overboard as usual.

Nor are Wall Street analysts overly enthused, says ZDNet, citing Merrill Lynch’s Richard Farmer, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster and J.P. Morgan’s Bill Shope.

“Given the typical enthusiasm over the iPhone and Apple in general it’s a bit stunning to see analysts escape the Steve Jobs aura,” says the story.

“Granted the iMac isn’t new, but it’s definitely more exciting than the Mini. Maybe these analysts left their pompoms at home because they weren’t invited.”

And on Macworld, “After Tuesday’s announcements from Apple, I walked away both impressed and confused,” says Rob Griffiths, summing up:

Anyone else think glossy-only is a really bad decision, or that removing the numeric keypad from the wireless keyboard is a dumb move?

And why would Apple make significant changes to a number of products and yet not feel the need to tell everyone about those changes?

Personally, I don`t understand the thinking behind these three decisions at all.

Meanwhile, “The iMacs go on sale at a time when the desktop computer has sunk in status – it’s almost the forgotten stepsister of the jazzier notebook computer,” says the Los Angeles Times.

“In the last quarter, desktops accounted for 36% of the 1.76 million Macintosh computers sold. The rest were notebooks.

“But by introducing a new line of iMacs, Apple hopes to breathe life into the desktops and woo customers away from Windows-based PCs.”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

reason no one is hyped is that it is a improvement to a existing product not a new one. same way sony releases new slimmer lighter notebooks every so often this i a slimmer faster imac nothing more.

  2. Roberto Says:

Given that the iMac looks more or less the same as it did 3 years ago, except for some cosmetic and technology tweaks, the reaction was perhaps expected. I think following the iPhone, nothing less than a holographic-projection computer would do for the analysts.

  3. Neil Anderson Says:

I already have a great PowerBook laptop. The new iMac will fit nicely on my desk. Just ordered one. :)
