Ultra Wide-Band legalised in UK
p2pnet news | Product News:- Starting next Monday, Ultra Wide-Band will be legal in the UK, potentially spelling the end of cables and leads winding hither and thither in British living rooms.
Called UWB, it can connect devices such as PCs, MP3 players and digital cameras, says the BBC.
Nor will users need a licence, it says, going on that UWB uses part of the radio spectrum to transfer large amounts of data, such as media files, over short distances.
“Data can be shifted over distances of around 30m at up to 2 gigabits per second,” it says.
And, “It could also be used to wirelessly link satellite dishes or cable TV connections to set-top boxes, doing away with the need for cables to be poked through walls and run around skirting boards,” says Guardian Unlimited.
“Satellite broadcaster Sky, for instance, is understood to be looking at whether UWB could be integrated into its equipment.”
Ofcom announced the introduction of the Wireless Telegraphy (Ultra-Wideband Equipment) (Exemption) Regulations 2007, says PC Pro, quoting Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards as saying:
“Radio spectrum is an essential raw material in the development of converged communications services.
“Where possible, we want to remove restrictions on the use of spectrum to allow the market to develop new and innovative services – such as UWB – for the benefit of consumers.”
