Usenet: under threat from BREIN?
p2pnet news | P2P:- Usenet? What’s Usenet?

You know, of course, and the Wikipedia describes it thus:
Usenet (USEr NETwork) is a global, decentralized, distributed Internet discussion system that evolved from a general purpose UUCP architecture of the same name. It was conceived by Duke University graduate students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis in 1979. Users read and post e-mail-like messages (called “articles” or “posts”) to one or more of a number of categories, called newsgroups. Usenet resembles bulletin board systems (BBS) in most respects, and is the precursor to the various Internet forums which are widely used today.
But when it comes to the entertainment cartels, it’s, Huh?
Until recently, Usenet been another of those special online noumenona not spoken of openly by the sharing community and, “This rule kept Usenet providers and users out of sight from anti-piracy organizations for years,” says Torrentfreak in Holland.
Things may be changing, however, and it’s all down to the fact the mainstream media finally seems to be cottoning on to Usenet’s importance in the P2P world.
It’s, “catching up with BitTorrent in terms of popularity, partly because it is considered to be safer,” says Torrentfreak.
But Tim Kuik, managing director of BREIN, Holland’s version of the MPAA, told Webwereld increased attention from computer magazines over the past year lowered the nerd-factor of the Usenet. Because of this it’s now become one of the main targets of anti-piracy outfits.
“Kuik further said that BREIN made a blacklist of Usenet providers who structurally infringe copyright,” says the story, going on, “Their plan is to urge these providers to stop their services and compensate the content owners for their losses.”
TorrentFreak quotes an insider who works closely with the likes of the MPAA and RIAA as saying he too has noticed Usenet is getting more attention.
“BitTorrent is still enemy number one, but there is a significant growth in Usenet monitoring,” the story states, going on, “Some Usenet providers now use BitTorrent sites to advertise their services and according to our source, this is another big reason why it caught the attention of anti-piracy outfits.”
The people in charge at most anti-piracy organizations, “hardly know how to write an e-mail,” adds Torrentfreak. If it’s not in the media, “it’s not a target” and, “If only people kept to rule number one this probably would have never happened.”
However, Usenet providers aren’t impressed.
“BREIN often makes statement that lead to nothing,” observes Remco Habets from Usenet provider Usenet4u, quoted by Torrentfreak.
“One and a half year ago they also said that they were going to take on newsgroups; we’ll see.”

I don’t think BRIEN can shut ANYONE down! They certianly tried with TPB and Demoniod……BOTH were a miserable failure!
So if they cannot stop torrent sites…why do they think they wil have ANY luck trying to shut down something they couldn’t hope to shut down if they tried? The only thing that would happen EVEN IF stuff was taken off of usenet, was that it would be POSTED BACK the very next day!
And the time it takes to put in a request to take off offending material….usually, the material has already been taken off usenet because of retention.
So that is DEFINATELY a losing battle! They had better stick to torrents.

The RIAA will NEVER take control of the share of files. You need to know that right here and now. You are running in a hamster wheel, going no-where in progress. As you view this message many people all over the WORLD are downloading torrents and distributing trillions of files. You can try all you want, however, the distribution of illigal media. You think you’re so funny dont you, however, you’re wrong. As you view this message there are also many other private p2p swapping nettworks and multinettwork shares being formed and runned and we speak. So really, you cant win, the govenment is a tiny ioda swimming through a deep sea of the people.
“The government by the people and for the people shall not perish from the face of the earth.”
Dont doubt us RIAA, it will continue. Try all you want and keep running your fat asses on the hamster wheel. This is the revolution and it will NEVER stop. Applaud it. Live with it.
