Pirate us, Franz Ferdinand tells fans

p2pnet news | Music:- “Not yet,” says grey lettering on a black background on Franz Ferdinand’s home page.

And, “”I like the idea that, because of downloading, people are going to buy songs only if they are good,” said the band’s Alex Kapranos in a Playboy interview quoted by Right Thoughts last year.

I think that’s a positive thing. It means lazy bands aren’t going to get away with giving you one hit single and an album full of filler. We like the idea that every song should stand up in its own right so you don’t have to listen to a song in the context of an album to understand it.

I suppose that’s why I’m sympathetic to the download environment.

So it’s hardly surprising the band, from Glasgow in Scotland not Vienna in Austria, is “encouraging fans to illegally download its latest recording,” as Aversion sums it up.

The “Not yet” refers to the fact they’ve covered David Bowie’s Sound and Vision for a release to mark BBC Radio 1’s 40th anniversary, and the album won’t be released by the Beeb until October 1 in the UK.

But, “Franz isn’t too keen on greasing the wheels of capitailism [sic], and encourages fans to pirate the song from peer-to-peer networks,” says the story.

And, “I seem to remember back in 2000 that The Offspring tried to make their ‘Conspiracy Of One’ album a 100-percent free download and Columbia Records blew a gasket,” says Doug Aamoth on CrunchGear.

Meanwhile, Franz Ferdinand is encouraging people to use LimeWire to do the actual downloading, says Aversion.
Is that cunning bit of advance promotion on the part of LimeWire owner Mark Gorton?

Or do the guys just like LimeWire, which is to shortly open its own online store?
