Japan wants a brand new Net

p2pnet news | Politics:- Japanese communications minister Yoshihide Suga wants about $67,718,135 so his department can replace the Net with a brand new system by the year 2020.

“Speaking to reporters in Brazil, where he is visiting, Suga said an organization will be set up as early as this fall with cooperation from businesses, academia and government offices for promoting the technology when the Internet is seen to be faced with increasing constraints in achieving higher throughputs of data as well as ensuring data security,” says Newlaunches.com, quoting Kyodo News.

“The envisaged network is expected to ensure faster and more reliable data transmission, and have more resilience against computer virus attacks and breakdowns. The ministry is hoping Japan will take a lead in development of post-Internet technology and setting global standards, a move that ministry officials believe would help make Japanese companies competitive in the global market for hardware and software using such technology.”

In PC Magazine, “I used to joke around about shutting down the Internet so that its protocols and basic architecture could be rewritten from scratch,” says John C. Dvorak, going on

“I was semiserious. More recently, Elton John, who apparently can’t use a computer, said the Net should be shut down for five years so that the arts can flourish. Okay, whatever. Myself and Elton John aside, we’re actually now seeing serious initiatives that may result in the closing of the Internet as we know it.”

Japan already has a standing ‘e-Japan’ policy, “which aims to create a country-wide network connecting every networked device, whether it be a mobile phone or radio tagged container,” says PC Pro.

Meanwhile, Suga also said he’ll, “set up a task force early next month to oversee the transition from analog to digital broadcasting in July 2011,” according to Newlaunches, which adds:

“The task force will request the electronics industry to produce and sell low-price converters to enable analog TVs to receive digital broadcasting programs within two years, the minister said. ‘We will consider providing simplified converters to low-income households for free or distributing coupons to assist them to purchase such converters’.”
