Bowie gets the remix bug
p2pnet.net News:- Remixes are OK. David Bowie is using the concept as a marketing tool. So they must be.
Since April 16 Bowie has not only been supporting this new art - albeit for purely commerial considerations - he’s been offering his own music for practitioners to use.
It all comes down to a promo for a car, for a passel of software apps, for Bowie himself and for his Reality album. But it’s still an innovation. And it doesn’t even matter whether or not you like Bowie, who’s definitely a legend in his own mind.
The story is spreading the word, reaching people everywhere with items on what Bowie calls ‘mash ups’ on sites in Malaysia, the US, India, Japan, Canada - you name it - and you can be sure others will follow Bowie’s example.
After all, he himself was probably inspired by DJ Danger Mouse’s Grey Album, a re-mix of tunes from The Beatles’ White Album Jay-Z’s Black Album.
EMI tried to stomp it but succeeded only in promoting it to the nth degree and Bowie clearly hopes the same thing will happen here.
Bowie dumped Virgin in 1991 to start his own label, ISO, and in this PR exercise, wants people to use any track from his Reality CD.
All ‘mash-ups’ must contain at least one track from Reality and mixers can also use "any other favorite Bowie track".
"However," says the site, "all entries are limited to Bowie music exclusively. Don’t use music from other artists."
Each week during the contest, which ends on May 27, DavidBowie.com will choose the top three entries and post them online so people can vote for the winner
Mixes that make it past the DavidBowie.com judges (inluding Bowie hmself) become finalists and their creators will make the final cut with Bowie himself.
