China hackers ‘infect’ German sites
p2pnet news | Security:- Reports of Chinese hackers breaking into German computers are a matter of “grave concern,” says Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, quoted by PC World.
“Jiabao’s comments, made during a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Beijing, were prompted by a report published two days earlier in the German news magazine Der Spiegel claiming that Chinese hackers had been able to infect German government computers with spyware,” says the story.
Germany is not, however, alone.
Chinese sites are also, “being used heavily to target computer networks in the Defense Department and other U.S. agencies, successfully breaching hundreds of unclassified networks, according to several U.S. officials,” says the Washington Post, going on:
“Classified systems have not been compromised, the officials added. But U.S. authorities remain concerned because, as one official said, even seemingly innocuous information, when pulled together from various sources, can yield useful intelligence to an adversary.
The US Committee on Homeland Security recently “blasted” DHS cio Scott Charbo for, “his alleged lack of leadership on key security issues,” questioned his willingness to make necessary security fixes, and wondered about his ability to “’head the agency’s IT operations,’ said an earlier PC World story, continuing:
“Committee members also, “grilled Charbo on his awareness of previous computer intrusions at other federal agencies by Chinese hackers, and asked him why he had failed to solicit detailed information on the attacks from the US-CERT and intelligence agencies.”
“However, Charbo retorted that much of the criticism was based on outdated data which ignored security improvements the DHS has been making.”
