Vista SP1: arriving next year
p2pnet news | Product News:- Having paid good money for the heavily hyped Microsoft Vista, significant numbers of buyers have been complaining about performance, compatibility, and reliability.
Other than that, no problems.
However, relief is in sight, if you can describe the first quarter of next year in that way.
That’s when the first Service Pack 1 is slated for release to the Great Unwashed.
But a “moderate sized audience” will be graced with a beta version within next few weeks, says PC Magazine.
“Microsoft began testing early pre-beta versions of Vista SP1 and XP SP3 earlier this month with approximately 100 testers, but copies of both quickly began appearing online,” to the annoyance of David Zipkin, a Microsoft senior product manager for Windows Client, says InformationWeek.
Some fixes in the leaks won’t be included in the final versions of the updates and, “I think it’s unfortunate that they were leaked,” the story has Zipkin saying.
“At this point in the game, that kind of information can give misdirection and misinformation to our customers.”
Windows Vista SP1’s goal is to, “address key feedback Microsoft has received from its customers without regressing application compatibility,” it says, going on:
“Windows Vista SP1 will deliver improvements and enhancements to existing features that significantly impact customers, but it does not deliver substantial new operating system features. For example, the service pack improves the performance of the desktop shell, but it does not provide a new search user interface or a new version of Windows® Media Center.”
Updates fall into three categories, says the company: quality improvements, including all previously released updates, which address reliability, security, and performance; improvements to the administration experience, including BitLockerTM Drive Encryption (BDE); and, support for emerging hardware and standards, such as an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) and an Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT).
Wouldn’t it be nice if all companies could get people to pay for faulty products and then wait patiently while said companies figure out how to fix the problems?

Ah ha! Winxp SP3 was an update. It’s already out. Only thing it addresses is the lack of enough serial number base for registering XP. Other than that, no additional functionality is supplied with the update.
I don’t have Vista either. I bought a new computer recently but made sure to get one of the XP OSes and not Vista. I did have the choice and chose. There is nothing I have heard of Vista that compells me to desire it or to pay the high price of the OS for something I don’t want.
