Wikiscanner-type apps could be fixtures
p2pnet news | Games:- “Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai has confused and angered easily confused and angered gamers by stating that it’s actually a good thing that developers aren’t quite getting the most out of PS3 at the moment,” posts Keith Stuart in The Guardian’s games blog.
Hirai is quoted as saying, “The power that we’ve packed into PS3 will really manifest itself in software titles that come up four, five or six years down the line.’
“Now that’s spin!” – Stuart has an “Evil Avatar regular” stating, going on, “So all of the stories that have come out lately about how hard the PS3 is to develop for – including inferior PS3 ports, massive delays and even cancellations – that’s all good news.”
Similar ire has been aimed at Sony Liverpool, he states, adding:
Someone at the studio has apparently been caught via WikiScanner tampering with the Halo 3 Wikipedia entry.
The wiki-scamp made a small edit to suggest that the visuals won’t be much improved from Halo 2.
But as Ars Technica points out, says Stuart, “as edits go, this was slight and had a credible source, but if I were working for any of the big three I’d be telling my employees to stay away from Wikipedia.
“It just doesn’t look good when stuff like this comes out.
But things won’t rest there, and it’s for the best.
If people who post ‘corrections’ know they stand a better than even chance of being picked up, it can only be good for the Wikipedia.
p2pnet asked Wikiscanner creator Virgil Griffith if he’d had any feedback from Wikipedia and, “I am pleased to say that Wikimedia Foundation’s response has been wholly positive,” he said.
“There’s even talk of incorporating something like WikiScanner into MediaWiki.
“I think WikiScanner is a great example of how Wikipedia can effectively combat disinformation while still maintaining the low barrier to contributing that is fundamental to Wikipedia`s success.”
Griffh says he hopes to see more “backend analyzers” such as his WikiScanner used in “countering surreptitious disinformation campaigns”.
