AMD Quad-Core slated for December

p2pnet news | Product News:- Advanced Micro Devices today is unveiling says its new energy saving Quad-Core AMD Opteron CPU aka Barcelona will start shipping at the end of this year.

“AMD plans to incorporate the processor into its Opteron line of chips for data centers,” says the Seattle Times.

But AMD’s latest is exactly that: late, arriving almost a year after its rival introduced a quad-core version of its Xeon processor.

Intel already sells 20 quad-core processors “and last week announced new versions,” says the story.

“The reason we’re later than we want to be is we have all these new technologies on the chip,” InternetNews has Steve Demski, Opteron product manager, saying.

It goes on:

Those new technologies include CoolCore, which turns off unused parts of the processor, Independent Dynamic Core Technology, an enhancement to AMD PowerNow! Technology that allows each core to vary its clock frequency depending upon its workload, and Dual Dynamic Power Management (DDPM), which provides an independent power supply to the cores and to the memory controller, allowing the cores and memory controllers to operate on different voltages, determined by usage.

Budapest, a single socket version of Barcelona for desktop workstations, will come out next year.

“Our bread and butter is the two-way market, and the four-way market is where there’s the most margin,” says Demski, according to InternetNews. “That’s where the focus is. The [1-way] 1000 series ends up third on the priority list.”

George Lucas’ Lucasfilm is among the first customers.
