New, free P2P mobile phones
p2pnet news | Mobiles:- Sweden’s TerraNet says it’s found away to use P2P technology to allow users to speak on its handsets without mobile phone base stations.
And the new communications system will have particular advantages for poorer regions of the world.
“TerraNet founder Anders Carlius told the BBC World Service’s Digital Planet programme that the idea for TerraNet came when he was on safari in Tanzania in 2002, and found that poor connectivity meant he could not ring friends riding in another jeep only a few metres away,” says the BBC.
The TerraNet technology works using handsets adapted to work as peers to route data or calls for other phones in the network, says the story, going on:
The handsets also serve as nodes between other handsets, extending the reach of the entire system. Each handset has an effective range of about one kilometre.
This collaborative routing of calls means there is no cost to talk between handsets.
When a TerraNet phone is switched on, it begins to look for other phones within range. If it finds them, it starts to connect and extend the radio network.
“With a reach of up to 5 km between a broadband connection and the phone the technology is a good alternative to other market segments than the established GSM-infrastructure,” says the company, promising:
“By using old technology in a whole new way and by using very advanced traffic planning TerraNet can archive the same speech quality as mobile phones sold today.”
TerraNet phones search for others and when they find them, they connect, adding to the network, says Digital Trends.
“The more phones, the greater the network, as each set effectively doubles the 1km. distance,” it says.
“Dial a number and if the person is within range, the call is completed.”
This method of routing, “means that calls in the network are free. That’s a huge plus in many poor areas of the world.”

What about power consumption? It should be more than traditional phones, because phones on the network retransmit transit traffic.
