Prince wages war on Net pirates

p2pnet news | Music:- Prince, who literally gave away thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of his Planet Earth CD as part of a promotion in UK Sunday newspaper, now says he’s going after online pirates.

To no one’s surprise, “Prince’s Planet Earth CD is all over the P2P networks, not to mention eBay,” p2pnet posted shortly after news of Prince’s largess was announced.

Now he seeks to “reclaim the net,” says MediaGuardian.co.uk.

“Prince is threatening to sue a raft of major websites, including YouTube, eBay and Pirate Bay, as part of a legal initiative to ‘reclaim the internet’ from rampant piracy,” says the story, going on:

Lawsuits relating to Prince’s material will be launched in the US and UK as part of a campaign led by anti-piracy firm Web Sheriff, which is representing the star.”

Web Sheriff, eh? Rings a bell.

Something to do with Sweden’s The Pirate Bay, was it? Or maybe the UK’s Arctic Monkeys? Or Canada’s New Pornographers?

Anyway, the story has Web Sheriff chief sheriff John Giacobbi declaring, “We have to build a 21st century model for the entertainment industry.”

heh

Good luck. First, he’ll have to drag them, kicking and screaming, out of the 1970s.

Apparently, YouTube, eBay and (The) Pirate Bay are “the vanguard” of online piracy and Giacobbi hopes, “once cases against those companies had been won, smaller sites would be more respectful,” states MediaGuardian.co.uk, adding Prince’s legal representatives, “have requested the removal of around 2,000 illegally uploaded videos from YouTube”.

Looks like Prince is kissing the Big 4’s ass to get his future CD’s back on the shelf.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Thats it? threatening YouTube and the Pirate Bay? And here I thought he was going to do something threatening like forcing everyone to listen to him sing.

  3. Dan Says:

E-Bay is an interesting target, since reselling a CD is legal.

  4. Reader's Write Says:

I can believe this! Why did he put his stuff on internet then?

  5. Reader's Write Says:

I believe that he was coerced because I don’t see the advantage for him to do this.
Anyway I am not listening to Prince stuff even if it is way better that Britney Slut or Madona Crap.

Reselling an original CD is illegal? Really?

Ok I am going to resell all my CD on Ebay!

  7. iHuman Says:

We should sue prince for waisting our time

somewhat confused what you are saying, anyways what I was saying it is legal

I believe it is the same in Europe, but when you purchase a CD, you have the legal right to resell it. If it was not legal, then used CD stores would be illegal, as that is the same thing as selling it on Ebay.

I find it interest because he sold it to a newspaper with the express permission to offer it as a freebee. Now it is one thing to say “Here’s my new album for sale”, it’s quite another to give the impression that its free for the taking and then later quibble because it’s on the net.

There is one sure way not to have it on the net. Don’t distribute it and it will always be under your control. Once it gets out into the public you can bet it will be on the net. Not if but rather when.

I don’t see this going anywhere and it being a waste of time. I suspect the cartels have put him up to this to get back in their good graces after they missed out on getting the lions share of money. I would not put it past them to say something like you’re finished in the music biz unless to go through with sueing and attaching your name to this action to back us up.

May be prince is a stuff out of quantum mechanic just like the RIAA.

He is for the RIAA and against it at the same time.

Similarly the RIAA has two different spins at the same time. (At least!)

Now I am going to conduct an experiment to determine if the RIAA can be dead and not-dead at the same time.

    Watch!

    AAh this uncertaincy principle!

    Prince! I remember him.
I used to have every album he ever did.

Then in 2002 I sold my entire CD and album collection for like $2,000

Since then I pretty much have all that music Back.
But now it’s in MP3 format and it didn’t cost me a Dime.

    Ha ha :)

Since 2002 I have not been a customer of the record industry.

Hmmm! But I still have the latest music and some of the coolest bootleg mixes :)

And this year I found Full Uncompressed DVD trading.

Guess what! The only media I buy now is Books from amazon.com and the local newspaper.

Screw them Capitalist bastards, Save your money for more useful things.
