Shut down lyric sites!

p2pnet news | Music:- Sites carrying lyrics are in trouble again.

In 2005 MPA (Music Publishers’ Association) president Lauren Keiser was trying to get web pages featuring lyrics shut down and also wanted “jail time” thrown in, just to make sure.

Now, the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) has “quietly stepped up” efforts to shut down popular sites, ” that publish lyrics to songs without their permission – and are demanding that Google and Yahoo! remove all references to them in search results,” says the New York Post.

What’s behind it? Angry songwriters, perhaps?

“The move against lyric sites comes as the publishing business is in the midst of rolling out official online-lyric offerings through such places as Yahoo! Music and Real Networks’ Rhapsody, via deals with lyric aggregators Gracenote and LyricFind,” says the story, going:

“In those deals, publishers license lyrics for online reproduction in exchange for a portion of ad revenues from the sites.”

Among the sites in the crosshairs are AZ Lyrics Universe and Lyrics.com.

Not only but also, “in a new twist, publishers are going after search engines, too,” says the New York Post, adding:

“Under DMCA regs, search engines are vulnerable to lawsuits for linking to sites hosting unauthorized works.

“Publishing sources say the NMPA has been talking to Google and other search engines about removing illegal lyrics sites from search indices.”

There’s this song I heard on the radio. I know a clip of the lyrics. I tried finding a search box at http://www.riaa.com/ so I could find out who made it. There was none. I typed the lyrics into Google and found the artist and title easily. A little more research led me to what record company owned the song. I went to that company’s website to see if they’d let me know what song and artist it was based on the lyrics. But there was no search box there either. Google helped me find the song name, artist, and CD that the song was on, this is required information when you want to buy the CD! The record company that released it and the RIAA were no help at all. It’s no surprise, but it’s yet another fun example of how accurate their aim is when they want to shoot themselves in the foot.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Every day it seems it seems like these people come out with something stupider than the last.

  3. Monkey D. Luffy Says:

“this is required information when you want to buy the CD!”

Stop giving these assholes money, they pay a pittance to the artists and use the rest to fatten their pockets, sue fans, and shut down tab and lyrics sites.

  4. RIAA rep Says:

To the first poster that couldn’t find anything on our RIAA or members sites: this problem is the fault of all you illegal downloaders, you idiot.

We say what you get and what you don’t get. Capiche?

  5. Reader's Write Says:

To the above poster: This is excatly why p2p now exists. By not meeting the needs of the public, as usual a vaccum has been filled to take care of that need.

Isn’t it nice that the labels don’t have much to say in that but are left with only rear guard actions in attempting to uphold their outmoded business model?

They are not winning any more customers with their tactics in court.

  6. huh Says:
