MediaDefender debacle: update

p2pnet news | P2P:- On the MediaDefender debacle highlighting the online scalp hunter’s private correspondence, it’s, “displayed neatly in both thread and chronological order,” says Forrest F’s aptly named Media Defender e-mail database blog.

There you’ll find:

  • View by threads
  • View by date
  • Transcript for MediaDefender.Phonecall-MDD (original MP3, 8.7 MB)
  • Upload stats for Gnutella/etc decoy files

All four were online when we went for a look much earlier but unfortunately, by 12:06 Pacific only the transcript was still available.

There’s also a note slugged jon yards <randysaaf@yahoo.com>:

Subject: mediadefender

I am the CEO of MediaDefender. We have begun our civil and criminal investigations into the stolen emails from our company. We are meeting with the FBI on monday. Your IP address has been logged. I hope it was worth the thrill.

Says Torrentfreak:

The leak of MediaDefender’s emails caused quite some controversy.

Ironically, in a recently leaked phone call, a New York attorney and MediaDefender discuss the security of their email-server. Whilst there’s some initial confusion as to where the leak may have originated, they eventually write it off as some technical problem.

The leaked phone call shows that they’re unsure about their network protection, their IDS etc. One of the parties is on a VOIP connection which may explain how the leak was obtained.

Similar to the email leak, a group called ‘MediaDefender-Defenders’ released the file, and in the .nfo file we read:

MediaDefender-Defenders proudly presents some more internal MediaDefender stuff’ more will follow when time is ready. MediaDefender thinks they’ve shut out their internals from us. Thats what they think.

The subject of the call is rather serious. MediaDefender is apparently involved in an ongoing Child Porn investigation. Their job is to identify child-porn images and report the IPs of the offending computers back to the government. A tricky project since it would mean that they actually have to download and rate the illegal content.

This won’t be the end of the leaks according to the ‘MediaDefender-Defenders’, they claim more will follow when the time is ripe.

In addition the the phone call, a huge MySQL database dump from a MediaDefender server was leaked on BitTorrent as well.

The database shows tracking and decoy file information for the Gnutella network which is used by P2P clients such as LimeWire.

All this leaked information is a huge blow for MediaDefender, and it will undoubtedly cost them a lot of time and money to clean this up.

Interestingly, no evidence can be found that MediaDefender is actually involved in prosecuting or gathering evidence against filesharers (as we reported earlier).

Their core business is releasing fake files and polluting the filesharing networks.

Definitely stay tuned.

And the site is now refusing connections :-(

  2. Spike Says:

Whats the FBI going to do about someone hacking into a gmail account protected by a weak password? Maybe they should instead investigate why Jackass Jay was forwarding all his email to GMail in the first place. From what I gather MD-Defenders just used all the password information from the emails to infiltrate their network and access even more sensitive stuff.

no prob. its still on tpb

Like logging an IP means anything these days. With all the proxies, zombie pcs, etc it’s difficult to put much faith in IP addresses these days.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

“Upload stats for Gnutella/etc decoy files”

Couldn’t this be used as evidence to sue them for abuse / inappropriate use of network resources / spam ?
I’m pretty sure you could take these guys to the cleaners with such evidence.

“Like logging an IP means anything these days. With all the proxies, zombie pcs, etc it’s difficult to put much faith in IP addresses these days.”

I have to agree. Assumptions of IP absolutism is inapposite.

  7. xforce Says:

I think there should be more phone calls recorded and released. Doubtful that these corporate CEOs are actually going to put something in a tracable email which can later be used as evidence.

Obviously Touche! Their boat is on fire. Obviously their boat is on fire and now that their illegal ativities as been exposed Oh the law Suits! Hopefully they will sink. Now the other one.

This type of leaks are ireversible. Can not recall. It’s all over the p2pnetworks and it is showing on website too.
Since some of the activities of media defender are obviously illegal this morons should prepare for the comming lawsuit instead of chassing their tail. The media defender sub is on fire! YES!

  9. lmfao Says:

lol at fake emails, lmfao at IP addresses… Kinda like selling Mcfee products at ISP levels (in my country no one gets taken to court for sending viri files over a network, I wonder why)

In any case I have to wonder if this is the same FBI and EPA which allows BS media to seek court actions, ’spam laws’, and DRM single devices or laws. While in my country while I get 500 Pages per month of M$, apple, Disney, and Warner tax free fake recycling ads in my real world mail box every month…. taking note of the BS on M$, apple, disney and Warner web sites about recycling!

  11. Reader's Write Says:

Their CEO is an idiot. It is not illegal to view the webpages that have their stuff on it due to the ‘culpable deniability’ factor–”Gee, javascript from a trojan popped a window behind my browser that accessed it and I closed it as soon as I shutdown my browsing session and noticed it! I haven’t updated my anti-virus program in a month so maybe that caused it.”

WHAT I REALLY WANT TO SEE is every one of the p2p companies SUEING them for breach of access contract. Every one of those companies has a disclaimer that says you can not upload fake files, flood the network, or do anything that would prevent or diminish the usage of the p2p network for others. And this dumbsh!t company is in business to do JUST THAT! They need to be squashed. And the point that you cannot use evidence gathered illegally is moot. Courts have upheld usage of evidence when it has become SO IMMERSED in society that it is no longer considered secret or difficult to locate. So by spreading this information far and wide, we can help ensure that the p2p companies have a basis for lawsuits.

The ends DO NOT justify the means. They NEVER do.

Media Defenders are actually Media Pollutors and Media Phukerz who polluting the media by sending their garbage over networks therefore causing useless traffic [actually this may even fit to terms "spamming" and "flooding" and "DDoS attacks" which are prohibited under law] :) .Can be some company more useless?Hardly.Brand new money-wasters nothing-doers company who is capable to causing just problems and harm only.By design.Business do you say?Let’s then serial killers to walk over the streets, they have sort of “business” too!

  13. lame_dude Says:

Well and I forgot to mention :) . According to their methods and actions, it should sound like this:
