Mr Smiley’s quarter century

p2pnet news | Off Topic:- He’s 25 tomorrow.
Mr Smiley, that is.
His creator, Carnegie Mellon University professor Scott E. Fahlman, is a little older.
And by way of a birthday celebration, “Fahlman and his colleagues are starting an annual student contest for innovation in technology-assisted, person-to-person communication,” says Associated Press.
The Smiley Award will be sponsored by Yahoo and carries a $500 cash prize.
“Fahlman posted the emoticon in a message to an online electronic bulletin board at 11:44 a.m. on Sept. 19, 1982, during a discussion about the limits of online humor and how to denote comments meant to be taken lightly.,” says AP.
“I propose the following character sequence for joke markers:
,” wrote Fahlman.
“Read it sideways.”
Somewhere along the line, Mr S lost his nose
